Brad Lander says he was detained during West Bank olive harvest
POLITICSWednesday, October 21, 2026 10:56AMPedro Rivera has breaking details. WEST BANK (WABC) -- Brad Lander, the Democratic nominee for New York's 10th Congressional District and former New York City comptroller, said Wednesday that he was detained by the Israel Defense Forces while participating in an olive harvest in the West Bank. In a social media post, Lander wrote: "I've been detained by the IDF, along with a group of rabbis & volunteers. We were simply harvesting olives in a grove near Nehalim in the West Bank. " He added, "The occupation is a crime under international law. Harvesting olives isn't a crime under any law I know. "According to the Israeli human rights group Rabbis for Human Rights, Lander was among roughly 90 volunteers and activists detained Wednesday while accompanying Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest near the village of Nahalin, outside Bethlehem. The group said volunteers had been helping farmers harvest olives on land they had been unable to access since Oct. 7.

Enigmatic Mercury Will Remain A Puzzle Until Someone Sends A Lander - Universe Today
Mercury remains one of our solar system’s most elusive and difficult planets to study. It's easier to send probes to the icy moons of Saturn or Jupiter, or even Pluto, than to land on our innermost planet of Mercury. Ground-based optical observatories don’t risk turning their sights on Mercury, without potentially damaging their optics under the very nearby glare of the bright Sun. Thus, of the planets in our inner solar system, Mercury arguably remains both the least explored and most misunderstood.

The Pomegranates That Seeded Life in the Universe - Medium
6 min read1 hour ago--(Image credit: Greg Wyatt)A supernova remnant looks like a pomegranate, carrying the seeds of life in the form of Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Sulfur (abbreviated as CHNOPS) inside. These elements make up roughly 98% of the mass of most living organisms and serve as the fundamental building blocks for all primary biomolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids (DNA). Carbon [C] is the backbone of life. Its unique ability to form four stable covalent bonds allows it to build complex, chain-like, and ring-shaped molecules. Hydrogen (H) is the most abundant element in the universe. It pairs with oxygen to form water (H2O) and creates hydrogen bonds, which give DNA its double-helix structure and stabilize protein shapes. Nitrogen (N) is a critical component of amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) and nitrogenous bases (the core elements of DNA and RNA). Oxygen (O) is an essential building block in water and organic molecules. It is a crucial constituent in cellular respiration, the process by which many organisms generate energy.
