Sherri Shepherd makes Broadway history playing Genie in 'Aladdin'

NEW YORK -- Sherri Shepherd is making Broadway history as the first woman to play the Genie in "Aladdin. "Shepherd sat down with entertainment reporter Joelle Garguilo to talk about taking on the iconic role and how she is bringing her own perspective to the character. "It's a lot of bro stuff going on with the Genie and Aladdin. But I'm a woman, and I'm a mother, and Aladdin doesn't have a mother. So automatically, it's more nurturing," Shepherd said. "I think there's one where they're supposed to fist bump, and they would teach me. I said, who's the... Women don't... We don't be doing that fist bumping thing, and I grabbed his face. And if I was in my twenties, I'd be like, Jasmine, who? But here, it's like more he's the son, and she's very proud of him. "Shepherd said taking on the role was intimidating at first. "My mantra is do things that scare you. I was so scared, and I go, yeah. This is an iconic role. How am I gonna live up to that? But then I had to say, but who are you, Sherri? As soon as you come out with all 92 of your teeth, you know, and smile. And then I had to go, but they have nothing... Nobody has anything to compare it to. You’re the first," she said.

Gold pressured despite falling yields as Hormuz diplomacy sparks oil price reversal - Kitco PM Report - Kitco

(Kitco NewsWire) - Spot gold prices were lower and spot silver prices were higher in late U. S. trading Tuesday, as weakening housing activity and lower Treasury yields failed to overcome persistent inflation concerns and expectations for additional Federal Reserve tightening. Crude oil prices reversed sharply from their morning highs amid conflicting reports about possible renewed U. S.-Iran negotiations, easing some inflation pressure and helping U. S. equities recover from early losses. At the time of the latest afternoon price reading, spot gold was trading near $4,122.50 an ounce, down $17.40, or 0.42%, while spot silver was trading near $57.800, up $0.825, or 1.45%. Tuesday's U. S. economic reports provided further evidence that elevated interest rates are weighing heavily on the housing market. September housing starts declined 5.2% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.221 million units, below expectations for approximately 1.305 million and down from an upwardly revised 1.288 million in August. Single-family construction fell 4.6% to an annual rate of 859,000 units, while building permits declined 0.2% to 1.400 million units.

People With ADHD Face a 70% Higher Risk of Early Death. This Seems to Help - Gizmodo

Living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can exact a heavy toll on people’s health and longevity. Research out this week, however, shows that timely ADHD treatment may claw back some of those years. Scientists at the University of Liverpool in the UK and others examined the medical literature on ADHD. They found that having ADHD was associated with higher mortality rates, but that people taking ADHD medication were less likely to die early than those who went untreated. Though more research is warranted to quantify the benefits of medications and other treatments for ADHD, this study is the latest to illustrate the long-term health impacts of the condition, the researchers say. “These results reinforce the importance of targeted intervention and access to diagnosis and treatment for ADHD individuals across the lifespan,” the authors wrote in their paper, published Monday in JAMA Network Open. The toll of ADHD ADHD is a complex condition characterized by symptoms like restlessness, impulsiveness, and having trouble staying focused, especially on everyday tasks.

Pause on OSAP at private post-secondary institutions to stay in effect until new year - CP24

A pause on student financial assistance payments across all private post-secondary institutions in Ontario will stay in effect until at least the new year, the province’s colleges and universities minister announced Tuesday. Nolan Quinn said in a late afternoon statement that the government intends to strengthen the approval process for career colleges and other private post-secondary institutions under the Ontario Student Assistance Program, but that work is not yet done. “Proposed measures will include caps on OSAP-funded enrolment, the exclusion of predominantly online-only programs, and strengthened student identification and verification controls,” he wrote. “While necessary to protect the integrity of OSAP and to protect Ontario taxpayers from abuse, we understand the impact that this work is having on students and families across the province. This impact is not lost on us as we work to restore integrity to the system and provide students with greater certainty and stability as quickly as possible.”The new validation system is expected to be implemented in the new year, he wrote, and OSAP payments will not resume until that time.

WAHPETON — North Dakota State College of Science will focus on student success, community partnerships and continuous improvement as it works toward a goal of generating 80,000 annual credits by 2030, interim President Lisa Karch said during the college’s State of the College address Oct. 19. Karch outlined the college’s strategic priorities, enrollment goals and financial position while emphasizing the importance of collaboration among faculty, staff, students and community partners. “The more time I spend traveling across our three locations and talking with all of you, students, community partners, the more convinced I become that our greatest strength is not found in a building, is not found in a program and it’s not found in the budget,” Karch said. “It is found in our people.”Karch said the college’s three strategic priorities are student success, community engagement and partnerships, and a commitment to continuous improvement. The priorities align with work already underway through the college’s strategic plan. Student success includes academic achievement, personal growth, student engagement, belonging and well-being, she said.

Oxygen collisions show evidence of jet quenching, a signature of early-universe matter - Phys.org

New results from the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provide strong evidence that smashing oxygen nuclei together at nearly the speed of light generates a quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a type of matter that existed just after the birth of the universe. The data, just published in Physical Review Letters, show that energetic jets of particles lose energy as they traverse the hot, dense matter left in the collision's wake.

Utah AG sues Kalshi, pursues profits from prediction market company

Utah Attorney General Derek Brown announced a lawsuit against Kalshi, its affiliates and two Susquehanna trading companies, alleging that the prediction markets platform had been facilitating illegal betting in the US state since 2024. In a Tuesday press briefing, Brown said Utah officials had petitioned a court to compel the companies to return about $30 million to $60 million in profits they made through allegedly illegal event contracts. The Utah attorney general alleged that Kalshi illegally offered its services to more than 32,000 users in the state, resulting in significant losses. “Under Utah law, I have determined that this operation is causing a significant and substantial ongoing harm to a significant number of Utahns,” said Brown. “And so today, we are asking the court to stop sports, elections, politics, culture and mention bets here in Utah.” Kalshi sued Utah in February after lawmakers passed a bill on betting on prediction markets as gambling under state law. In August, a judge ruled in favor of Utah officials, saying federal laws under the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) do not preempt state gambling laws.
