Trump recycles ‘Dumocrats’ attacks at Kentucky rally but is privately ‘blaming aides’ for gloomy midterms outlook - The Independent

At a rally in Kentucky on Saturday, President Donald Trump reprised familiar attacks on Democrats and predicted a strong Republican showing in the midterm elections. But privately, he has reportedly blamed his aides as polls signal trouble ahead. In a roughly 90-minute speech in Highland Heights, Trump launched into familiar territory, deriding Democrats as “lunatics” and communists intent on allowing men to compete in women’s sports and letting immigrants enter the country illegally. “Who the hell is voting for these people?” Trump asked. “They’re gonna annihilate your borders, decimate Kentucky farms and energies, mutilate your children and give 25 million illegal aliens the right to vote,” he said. Praising a slate of GOP congressional candidates, he added: “The Republican Party is starting to look pretty good.”Behind closed doors, though, the 80-year-old president has struck a different tone, blaming aides and political operatives for a wobbling midterm strategy and voicing doubts about candidate choices, Reuters reported Saturday.

Einarson's big shot secures spot in Co-op Invitational semis - The Grand Slam of Curling

VICTORIA — Kerri Einarson called game. Trailing by two points coming home in the Co-op Invitational quarterfinals Saturday against Miyu Ueno, Einarson needed another one of her patented big shots to lift her team into the semis. Forget about the curveball, Kerri. Give 'em the heater. Einarson fired into the cluster and when the dust settled, it was a count of three points and a 6-5 victory for the crew from Gimli, Manitoba, as the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre erupted in applause. It was an impressive week for the two-time Japanese champion Ueno in her Karuizawa club's top-tier Grand Slam debut. Ueno, who upset Einarson 9-4 in the preliminary round, ousted Japan's Team Yuina Miura 9-7 in the tiebreakers earlier Saturday to advance to the playoffs. Einarson, who qualified for the No. 2 seed with a 3-1 record, opened with the hammer but couldn't convert, blanking the first and giving up a steal in the second. The teams alternated deuces in the third and fourth ends, and Einarson was forced to draw for a single in the fifth to tie it 3-3.

Rain98 is a blue-hued, pre-Y2K, Serial Experiments Lain inspired visual novel about time travelling to the past to end the world

Picture this. You're me, and you boot up the demo for Rain98, an incredibly blue-looking, rainy visual novel set in Tokyo, 1998, about a woman who refers to herself as the Angolmois, a world-ending reference to the predictions of good ole Nostradamus. At one point you have to light this woman's cigarette in a lightly stylish sequence. You get to a bit where you're asked to put your name in, and you put it in because like its predecessors, this is surely a self-insert kind of situation. Only you get a Steam achievement for getting a game over for putting your name in. Rude! But curious, so you, and of course I mean I, pressed on. In Rain98, you play as a nameless Generic Man who is deeply troubled, if not outright suicidal (of which this game has strong themes of) by the state of the world as it is in our present day. It's a fair stance to take! I would not exactly say things are good right now. But they weren't great in 1998 Japan, the year that Generic Man is somehow transported back to, finding this young woman, Reina Amehara, the Angolmois, in what he thinks is his apartment.

Sydney Astronomers Pinpoint The Most Distant Fast Radio Burst Ever Detected - Eurasia Review

Astronomers led by University of Sydney researchers have detected FRB 20240304B, the most distant fast radio burst ever recorded, which originated when the Universe was only about three billion years old and more than doubles the previous distance record. MeerKAT radio observations combined with James Webb Space Telescope infrared imaging identified the host as a small, metal-poor galaxy undergoing intense star formation, supporting the idea that at least some FRBs come from young magnetars.

Montrealers warn against complacency amid French protests - Global News

Montrealers took to the streets Saturday to stand in solidarity with high school students in France who protesters say are facing “detestable” conditions. Since mid-September, high school students in France have taken to the streets calling for education reform, saying conditions in their schools deteriorated dramatically following the summer break. They say schools are under-resourced and they are experiencing a shortage of staff. “Nobody should have to work this hard to do what they want to do in life and students in France, all they want to do is learn,” Amara Grant, a young Montrealer, told Global News at the protest at Phillips Square Saturday. The movement has since grown to protest the high cost of living and critique the social welfare funding. Similar protests have sprung up across Europe, including in Greece, Belgium and Albania. Expert says bus model involved in deadly Calgary crash considered ‘extremely safe’ - Global News

An expert on low-carbon transportation says the roughly 1,000 compressed natural gas buses running in Canada are still considered “extremely safe” after one such bus was involved in a deadly crash in Calgary that claimed the lives of three people. On Thursday, a chain-reaction crash happened when a transit bus hit several vehicles before rear-ending a parked bus, igniting an explosion that also left more than a dozen others injured. Calgary police said one officer was taken to the hospital with injuries after running towards a bus as fire erupted. One of the 12-metre-long buses involved in the crash was powered by compressed natural gas, a kind of fuel considered cheaper and more environmentally friendly than diesel gas. Buses that run on compressed natural gas are common in public transit and have been in operation for the past two decades, said Josipa Petrunic, president and CEO of Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC), a national non-profit focused on low-carbon transit research and planning. Denny Hamlin’s Not Ready for ‘Hail Marys’ with Four Races Remaining in NASCAR Season; Phoenix Could Change That

Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell sit on top of the NASCAR Cup Series standings with four races to go in NASCAR’s return to The Chase. Larson is defending his 2025 championship, looking to close out one era of playoff racing and start another on top, while Hamlin and Bell chase their first title, albeit one for a bit longer than the other. All three are happy with how the new system has worked, with Hamlin saying that if anyone from the top six wins the Championship, their success will be hard to dispute. Larson enters Phoenix with a 49-point lead over Hamlin and a 51-point lead over Bell. With a maximum of 76 points on the line in every race, it’s still technically anyone’s game with 304 points possible through the four remaining rounds. The problem for the playoff field is the only driver to pull off a perfect race so far, is the guy their chasing. Ryan Preece sits at the bottom of the 16-driver playoff field with 2140 points to Larson’s 2367. Only 227 points seperate the entire playoff field; extreme bad luck at the top and extremely good results at the bottom still have the chance to throw the Championship into mayhem.

How The Forest Came Back After Mount St. Helens - WorldAtlas

Wildfires strip American forests bare every year, and the real question is always whether the trees grow back. Mount St. Helens is the clearest case anyone has studied. Its blast scorched square miles of Washington forest down to bare rock and ash. Decades later the trees are back, and much of that happened with no planting at all. A few firs buried under snow and a single caged gopher helped drive the comeback. This is the best look we have at how trees grow back after a forest is wiped out. Snow still covered the slopes of Mount St. Helens during a 1982 eruption.

Battlefield 6 Devs Respond After Players Take Aim at 'Secuty' Typo and Cosmetic With 5 Pistols

Updated: Oct 17, 2026 9:28pm UTCThe Battlefield 6 team has responded after players took aim at a few controversial cosmetics added in Season 5. Battlefield Studios took to its official Discord server to offer background information on two skins that caused a stir with the launch of Battlefield 6 Season 5 this past week (via MP1st). The full text confirmed at least one of the issues has a fix in the works, while the other will seemingly remain the same. The cosmetics – one with what appeared to be a typo in the word "security" and another featuring infantry sporting a whopping five pistol holsters – were officially added October 13 and almost immediately drew ire from fans. It's that pesky misspelling, which took the shape of the non-existent word "security" on the armband of a McNeil skin, that the developers say will be fixed when Battlefield 6 Season 5 launches in November. Secuty 😭 It's AI #Battlefield6 https://t.co/8DVphghCSU— Battlefield Intel (@BattlefieldInte) October 13, 2026 "You called it out clearly, and we hear your concerns," the message, acknowledging the memes and conversations surrounding the new skins, said.

President Donald Trump touted his power in his second go around in the White House Saturday while rallying in Kentucky to bolster Republican turnout as his party struggles in the midterms, saying, “I can do stuff that is unbelievable.” Trump, who spoke in the city of Highland Heights to boost Republican candidates including Ed Gallrein for the U. S. House, was riffing on his decision to change how the U. S. government refers to the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

OSAP pause leads career college to suspend classes - Global News

An Ontario career college has suspended its academic operations as a result of a province-wide pause on student financial assistance to all private post-secondary institutions. Trillium College, with campuses in St. Catharines, Kingston, Oshawa, Sudbury and Cobourg, paused classroom and online instruction as of Friday, it said in a notice to students obtained and confirmed by The Canadian Press. It comes after Colleges and Universities Minister Nolan Quinn announced earlier this month that Ontario Student Assistance Program payments to career colleges and other private post-secondary institutions are paused while an audit is underway. Trillum wrote that it is offering interest-free payment arrangements, but many students have said they cannot make those payments without OSAP funding. “Many students have also asked for more time to assess their financial circumstances, explore alternative payment options and determine how they can realistically continue their education,” the college wrote. 'War booty': Cheap iPhone 18s advertised in Tehran after Hormuz shipwreck, claims report - The Times of India

(Screengrab from footage shared on social media)Apple's iPhone 18 smartphones are being advertised in Tehran at unusually low prices as “war booty”, with sellers claiming the devices were recovered from a cargo ship that sank near the Strait of Hormuz, Iran International reported on Saturday. The advertisements surfaced after a container ship reportedly sank near the strategic waterway on October 13. Videos circulating on social media purportedly showed shipping containers floating in the sea, with iPhones and expensive perfumes scattered in the water as people aboard small boats collected the goods. According to a report by Ynet News, footage circulated by media outlets across the Arab world on Thursday evening showed people retrieving objects from the water. One boat appeared to be carrying boxes of iPhones, with one report claiming that the devices were Apple's latest iPhone 18 models. The identities of those seen collecting the goods remain unclear. There has been no official confirmation of the incident. Iran's cyber police have warned prospective buyers against paying deposits or advance fees before inspecting the products and verifying sellers' identities.

The state of the State Department in the wake of the Kimberly Guilfoyle scandal - NPR

NPR's Joel Rose talks with James B. Story, former U. S. Ambassador to Venezuela, about the state of the State Department in the wake of the Kimberly Guilfoyle scandal. JOEL ROSE, HOST: The American ambassador to Greece resigned under pressure this week. Kimberly Guilfoyle, the ex-fiancee of President Trump's son, served in her role for about a year until a story by the Wall Street Journal reported that she'd asked a Trump donor to pay her credit card bill before she was appointed. This scandal is yet another blow for America's diplomatic corps, already understaffed during President Trump's second term. So what is the state of the U. S. State Department? We have called up James Story, a former U. S. ambassador to Venezuela and a state department veteran to answer that question. Ambassador, welcome to the program. JAMES STORY: Thank you all so much for having me today. Appreciate it. ROSE: I want to say first, NPR has not confirmed the reporting by the Wall Street Journal, but I wonder what your reaction was to Miss Guilfoyle's resignation. STORY: I was simply astonished.
