Wits University | HIV finds escape routes from preventive antibody – but newer antibodies may close them - European AIDS Treatment Group

Wits University news releaseIn a landmark HIV prevention trial, an antibody blocked viruses most vulnerable to it, but others broke through. Now researchers have uncovered how HIV evolved after those infections – and why the amount of antibody in the body is an essential part of the story. The Antibody-Mediated Prevention (AMP) trials enrolled more than 4,600 volunteers across Africa, the Americas, and Europe to test VRC01, a laboratory-made broadly neutralising antibody (bnAb). In the AMP trial, VRC01 did not significantly reduce HIV infections overall, although it reduced infections caused by highly sensitive strains by about 75%.  This study showed that HIV requires high antibody titers, and it illustrates the importance of maintaining those titers throughout the dosing cycle. A new study published in Nature Microbiology has now examined what happened after infection in people who received VRC01. The findings show how a virus can respond to antibody pressure – and offer clues for improving future antibodies and vaccines. Read the full news release here.

These 7 New Cars Have The Longest And Most Comprehensive Warranties

Car people across the country are well aware that the economy is once again in shambles. In addition to oil prices remaining through the roof and showing no signs of coming back down anytime soon, used car prices have also climbed to pandemic levels once again. It wasn't good then, and it's not good now. And while certain used cars are bucking the trend of getting more expensive with time, some car shoppers may feel incentivized to buy new during such times. If that's you, then one of the best ways to protect the massive investment that is purchasing a brand-new car is to ensure you have a good warranty. The best warranties you'll find these days tend to be from Korean automakers Kia and Hyundai. They have plenty of good cars, from the sleek Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the affordable Kona to the massive Kia Telluride and the surprisingly compelling K4.

A moment during Jay-Z’s recent concert in Paris summed up where soccer sits in culture today

There was a moment during Jay-Z’s recent concert in Paris that, for me, pretty much summed up where football sits in culture today. There wasn’t a ball being kicked. There wasn’t a match being played. Jay-Z walked onto the stage at the Stade de France wearing a one-of-a-kind, black-and-white, football-inspired shirt — by Louis Vuitton, designed by Pharrell — with the number 30 on the back marking 30 years since Reasonable Doubt.

RimWorld meets Moebius-esque roguelite colony sim Trailblazers: Into The March welcomes you aboard its hulking landships with a chonky-sounding demo

With the devs behind RimWorld gearing up for their next game with a recent engine switch, it'd be entirely fair if you were hankering for something new (if still familiar enough) yourself. Trailblazers: Into The March is one such game, having introduced itself to us earlier this year, a mishmash of the aforementioned colony sim, Nausicaa, Moebius, Andrei Tarkovski, Jeff Vandermeer, and FTL: Faster Than Light by Edwin's measure. And now you don't just have to look at its trailers, because there's a demo for you to have a go at. "In today’s demo, we have packed in so much for you to explore. From overcoming dangerous excursions to battling threatening foes," explain developer Strangers of the demo. "Take on contracts from the fixer and build out your perfect Trailblazing crew! " If you've not actually clocked roguelite colony-sim Trailblazer before today, you are said titular Trailblazer, a captain of a landship which are essentially big, honking, vaguely animal-shaped, Shadow of the Colossus sized crafts you pilot across the ground, taking on similar such opposing vessels.

Four Observations from Bayern Munich’s massive 6-1 win against RB Leipzig - Bavarian Football Works

Defensive woes befall Bayern yet againThis has been a recurring theme for Bayern since their return from the international break. The 3-3 draw with Viking is a stark reminder that the Bavarians have struggled to defend their goal, whether they’re holding onto a lead or up by several goals. Bayern completely dominated the Lawnballers, who only got their first shot on target with just over 10 minutes left to play. That screamed clean sheet, but Bayern somehow finds ways to concede goals. The 2-2 draw with Augsburg was more down to defensive errors, but it posits the same problem: Bayern’s defense is nowhere near as stable as last season. Against Paris Saint-Germain last year, Bayern managed to limit Luis Enrique’s side to just one goal in one half of football, after Luis Díaz got sent off. The puzzling thing is he managed it with the same set of defenders, more or less. At the very least, Bayern has Vincent Kompany in charge because as a former defender, he can help tighten up the back. The Belgian helped Dayot Upamecano cement his reputation as a solid defender, so he’s more than fit for the task. With Arsenal looming large, the team must organize themselves properly and accordingly

BMW F 450 RR Adds Race-Ready Looks To Entry-Level Power

Most new riders, when they throw a leg over their first sportbike, want to immediately feel like Valentino Rossi or Marc Marquez. Yet superbike development stays leagues ahead of what trickles down to the entry-level, and GP bikes even further — R3s and Ninja 500s aren't exactly decked out with ride-height devices. Aerodynamics have begun to work their way down in price, though, and now we're finally seeing aero elements on entry level bikes: The BMW F 450 RR, BMW's latest entry sportbike, has all the front wing your beginner heart could desire. The F 450 RR is the sporty sibling to the off-road F 450 GS, and it retains some of the same core specs. The 420 cc parallel twin engine still makes 48 horsepower at 8,750 rpm and 32 pound-feet of torque at 6,750 rpm, and it's still arranged with a truly baffling 135-degree crank offset, a number I simply won't understand until I get to swing a leg over one of these bikes for myself. The RR also matches the GS with the availability of BMW's Easy Ride Clutch system, which makes clutch use optional the same way a Rekluse does.

15 TV Shows To Watch If You Like The Sopranos - TVLine

So, you've finally finished "The Sopranos. " If you're not still trying to make sense of the finale that broke the internet, you're probably trying to figure out what — if anything – could possibly live up to the series you've just experienced. Few television dramas have managed to match its combination of sharp writing, morally complicated characters, and an unsettling ability to make audiences sympathize with terrible people. Whether you're staring at the black screen for the first time or have just completed your latest rewatch, the cure for this post-"Sopranos" malaise might be closer than you think — perhaps even on HBO. Many of the series listed below feature psychologically complex protagonists who lean more toward villain than antihero, with criminal activities that threaten to consume their personal lives and families. Others share "The Sopranos'" grim sense of humor or skepticism about the innate goodness of humanity. These aren't happy watches by any means — but if you woke up this morning craving cannolis and crime, we've got a few shows for you.

Charlie Vickers: ‘Tom Cruise cheated at freediving – that’s the headline’ - The Guardian

You once played Basil Fawlty in an amateur student production of Fawlty Towers at Queen’s College in Melbourne. How amateur was your Basil Fawlty moustache? It was terrible. It was real but it was definitely coloured in – I still have holes in my beard. I’d also shaved my head, so if you look at the early promo posters, you can clearly see I’m wearing a wig. Our theatre was closed so we had to perform in a circus tent in the middle of winter, on an oval in the university grounds, which was all very Fawlty Towers. I’ve always loved comedy. I didn’t really do anything serious until drama school. I always thought there might be a good spin-off with Sauron and Celebrimbor as an odd-couple situation. You play Sauron in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Tolkien wrote that Sauron “represents as near an approach to the wholly evil will as is possible”. What do you consider wholly evil? A complete disregard for the feelings and wellbeing of other people, to put it simply. It’s the intention, I think. I have horrible flashbacks to playing Aussie rules when I was about 17. I thought people were being quite evil to me at the time.

Continuous glucose monitors help type 2 diabetes patients spend 5 more hours a day in healthy blood sugar range - Medical Xpress

Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) could transform diabetes management for millions of Americans with type 2 diabetes who don't take insulin, according to findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The clinical trial found that adults using CGMs spent approximately five additional hours each day within their target blood sugar range compared with those receiving routine care. Nearly twice as many CGM users also achieved an A1c level below 7%, a common treatment goal for people with diabetes.

GDB 8.0: Oilers look to rebound after first regulation loss (8PM MT, SNW) - Oilers Nation

The Edmonton Oilers are in Utah tonight for the back half of their home-and-home with the Mammoth, and after Thursday’s 4-2 loss at Rogers Place, I’m hopeful that our boys will be fired up for the rematch. Utah handed Edmonton its first regulation loss of the season, stretched its own winning streak to three games, and made the Oilers pay for mistakes at every turn. The Mammoth crushed on special teams, Edmonton didn’t do enough at five-on-five to claw their way back, and that was the game. As for the rematch? Nothing would be finer than to repay the favour and hand the Mammoth a loss in front of their hometown fans. From my side of the TV screen, the most important thing the Oilers can do in tonight’s rematch is sort out their penalty kill. Utah popped two goals on three opportunities with the man advantage, and that proved to be the difference. The Mammoth’s power play is cooking at 37.5 percent through eight games, while Edmonton’s penalty kill is limping along at 68.2 percent, so handing that group a bunch of time on the PP would be a horrible idea.

The Apothecary Diaries: Xiaolan’s Story Focuses on Her Strengths

In the mainline The Apothecary Diaries series, the focus is on Maomao and Jinshi. There are a lot of important characters around them. They’re doing things too. But we don’t always see their sides of the stories or influence unless it’s directly tied to what the leads are going through. The Apothecary Diaries: Xiaolan’s Story spin-off manga prioritizes tales tied to the maidservant who showed up around the same time Maomao came to the Rear Palace. While she’s not as brilliant as her friend in some ways, this supplemental series highlights how influential she’s been on major events too. Recommended Videos Editor’s Note: There will be mild spoilers for some situations in volume 1 of The Apothecary Diaries: Xiaolan’s Story manga below. The events of The Apothecary Diaries: Xiaolan’s Story manga essentially run simultaneously alongside that of the main story, with on exception. Things start a few months before with her origin story. We know from Maomao’s kidnapping and the situation of other young women working in the Rear Palace that there are contracts formed where people receive pay and earned wages could be sent back from the girls working there.
