This is how evaluators test if an AI model is safe, and what they're checking for - NPR

Amid intense debate over regulating AI's rapid development, President Trump met with leaders of major AI companies on Tuesday and unveiled a document addressing the public's concerns. Signed by executives of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, SpaceXAI and NVIDIA, the document signaled no government regulation for now, but laid out steps that the AI companies said they would take voluntarily to make their products safer. That includes a pledge to monitor their AI systems' capabilities and whether the systems follow human intentions and values, as well as to work with "an independent external auditor or evaluator" to assess safety practices. Anthropic and OpenAI have already said they're expanding their work with third-party evaluators in the wake of a series of incidents where AI systems acted improperly or in ways their developers didn't expect. However, these steps in the document may not be quick fixes. The state of evaluation science is far from sufficient to ensure that AI systems always behave as people intend, according to the AI companies themselves and outside evaluators who spoke to NPR.

In defense of the mid-cute: Why forgettable rom-coms are perfect for our exhausted brains - Yahoo

It seems like every time a new romantic comedy is released in theaters, there's chatter about how the genre isn't getting the love it once did, but maybe this will be the movie that will revive it once and for all. But the death of the romantic comedy has been greatly exaggerated. They might not be driving people out to cinemas in droves like they used to with Pretty Woman or My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but there's no denying their power on couches. Straight-to-streaming rom-coms like People We Meet on Vacation and Office Romance have been among the most popular movies on Netflix and Prime Video over the last few years. I call them mid-cutes. They're predictable stories of person-meets-person, often adapted from beloved novels and starring actors you kind of know from something else. They get decently good critical reception, though they're not exactly reinventing the wheel. Mid-cutes are not formulaic slop (though Hallmark movies and vertical dramas certainly have their own fandoms!), but they tap into age-old tropes, like enemies-to-lovers or fake dating. They also come with fresh talent and Instagram caption-worthy declarations of love.

Gaza's influence is reaching stadiums, concerts and celebrity culture - Newsweek

The war in the Gaza Strip is increasingly reshaping conversations far beyond politics, with new controversies involving pop star Ed Sheeran, NFL linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and a growing number of athletes and celebrities speaking out on the conflict. The debate comes as the Palestinian death toll from the nearly three-year Israel-Hamas war has surpassed 74,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, figures that the Associated Press noted are widely used by U. N. agencies and international organizations. Artists, athletes, leagues and venue owners now face mounting pressure from fans, sponsors and advocacy groups as disputes over Gaza, free speech and activism increasingly play out in stadiums, arenas and concert venues.... Ed Sheeran, Macklemore and the Tour That Sparked a Music Industry RiftThe most visible entertainment controversy emerged from Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour after opening act Macklemore made repeated "Free Palestine" remarks during performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Following pressure from venue stakeholders and objections from some stadium owners, Macklemore was removed from the remaining U. S. tour dates.
