Is this the year for a Nobel prize in condensed matter, or maybe particle physics? - Physics World

Here at Physics World we have had some luck with predicting who is going to win a Nobel Prize in Physics. One successful strategy is to identify top physicists and just keep predicting that they will win – and eventually they do! For example, we picked Anton Zeilinger for the 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2019 prizes – and he won in 2022. Clearly, it was a mistake to give up on him in 2020.

China's Midea Challenges AI Data Center Cooling Market with 'World-First' Technology - BigGo Finance

Chinese HVAC manufacturer Midea Building Technologies has thrown down the gauntlet in the AI data center cooling market—long dominated by U. S., European, Japanese, and South Korean players—by unveiling what it claims is a "world-first" integrated power and cooling architecture. As AI semiconductor performance has surged dramatically, pushing per-rack heat output to megawatt levels, cooling technology has emerged as a critical competitive differentiator for data centers. With the entry of a Chinese player, global technology competition is expected to intensify further. At Data Centre World Asia (DCWA) 2026, which opened in Singapore on the 29th of last month, Midea introduced its power-cooling hyperconverged architecture, claiming it to be an industry first. The technology integrates power supply, energy storage devices, magnetic bearing chillers, and liquid cooling CDU (coolant distribution unit) systems into a single stack. The company explained that by managing power, storage, and cooling in an integrated manner, it provides a technological roadmap for developing high-density, high-efficiency, low-carbon AI data centers.

Edmonton man accused of abducting his 2 kids wanted on Canada-wide warrant - Global News

The search for a man and his two kids, missing for more than a month, has escalated as police now believe the children were abducted on purpose. On Wednesday, the Edmonton Police Service announced a Canada-wide warrant was issued on Sept. 23 for Scot MacDermid, 42, in relation to two counts of abduction in contravention of a custody order. That charge is considered when investigators believe a parent or guardian has taken a child under the age of 14, in violation of a valid court order, with the intent of depriving another guardian of possession of the child. MacDermid and his children, nine-year-old Lesley and six-year-old George, disappeared from north Edmonton on Friday, Aug. 28. Their last known whereabouts within the city was at the Manning Town Centre shopping complex in northeast Edmonton, near 155 Avenue and 37 Street. Story continues below advertisement

Ostrander has unfinished business in bid for third term as Brighton mayor - Frequency News

A comprehensive taxation review may be coming to Brighton, if Brian Ostrander is re-elected. Ostrander, seeking a third consecutive term as mayor, recognizes that municipal taxes are at a point where people have had enough with increases and relief may be needed. This review will ask residents what services they are willing to keep and what services could be scaled back or scrapped. “Really what I’m hearing is that taxation levels are just about at the point where people are kind of done. I get that,” Ostrander explained. “Are we delivering the services that you need? Is there anything we can cut back on? Are we meeting your needs and or if you don’t want to pay as much as you’re paying today, what are you willing to give up?” Tax fairness is a concept being proposed by Ostrander to review whether rural residents are getting appropriate services for the price paid.

How IVF ‘add-on’ treatments put patients in an impossible position - Scientific American

Alessandra Dowling always wanted a big family. As one of four siblings, she hoped for three little ones of her own. When she found out she was pregnant in December 2022, after months of struggling with fertility, she was thrilled—she pictured sharing the news with family, meeting her baby and bringing her newborn home. Then, in January 2023, she miscarried. “I was devastated,” Dowling, now age 33, recalls. “I told myself it was probably just bad luck because miscarriages are unfortunately common.” Indeed, around one in five pregnancies end in miscarriage. She still wanted a big family. After a second miscarriage, “everything changed,” Dowling says. She stopped trusting her body. Every subsequent pregnancy test became associated with fear, not excitement. “I wasn’t just worried about getting pregnant anymore. I was terrified of losing another pregnancy,” she says.
