Vitamin C linked to fewer deaths in blood disorder trial - Science Daily

Vitamin C can increase the activity of cellular proteins known as TET enzymes, which help regulate whether certain genes are switched on or off. Reduced TET enzyme activity is a common feature in some blood cancers, prompting researchers to investigate whether vitamin C supplements might benefit people at risk of developing these diseases. The findings come from a phase 2 clinical trial published online by Wiley in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society.

Integrating Behavioral Health and Medicine Makes Care Whole - Psychology Today

As we approach World Mental Health Day on October 10, we will again hear a familiar statement: “There is no health without mental health.” You will find very few people who disagree. However, the way healthcare is organized sends a very different message. Even though mental health holds a much more prominent role in our national dialogue, behavioral healthcare continues to be treated as a lower priority in our healthcare system. It is still commonly financed, delivered, and discussed as though it exists somewhere just outside of the healthcare system. Patients needing mental health services are sent to different providers, through different referral systems, utilizing different insurance networks, with limited coverage and reimbursement rates. Behavioral health records often remain separate from medical records, and communication between mental health professionals and medical providers is frequently inconsistent or nonexistent.

WHO releases new guidance to prevent heat-related illness at mass gatherings - World Health Organization (WHO)

Heat-related illness at mass gatherings, such as major sporting, religious and cultural events, has become a significant public health and operational risk, affecting spectators, attendees, volunteers and workers. The World Health Organization (WHO) has today published a new review of evidence with guidance showing that most of the heat-related illnesses at major events can be prevented or treated on site when timely risk management measures are put in place. The evidence review, covering studies published between 1980 and 2025, documented nearly half a million medical encounters at mass gatherings, including more than 22 000 heat-related illnesses. However, studies also showed that when on-site medical systems are well organized, more than 90% of patients can be treated at event venues, substantially reducing demand on local hospitals and ambulance services. "Extreme heat is an increasing threat to health, safety and operational continuity in mass gatherings, and must be addressed not only as an environmental hazard but as a core operational and governance challenge," said Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, Executive Director, WHO Health Emergencies Programme.

Is this the year for a Nobel prize in condensed matter, or maybe particle physics? - Physics World

Here at Physics World we have had some luck with predicting who is going to win a Nobel Prize in Physics. One successful strategy is to identify top physicists and just keep predicting that they will win – and eventually they do! For example, we picked Anton Zeilinger for the 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2019 prizes – and he won in 2022. Clearly, it was a mistake to give up on him in 2020.
