Business Roundup - Aug. 28, 2026 - Taproot Edmonton

Construction industry calls for fair risk allocation in extreme weather Representatives of the construction sector say they need to be involved in how extreme weather risks are addressed in project planning, procurement, and contract delivery. On Aug. 26, council's infrastructure committee heard from representatives from the Edmonton Construction Association, which represents the industrial, commercial, and institutional construction sectors, including contractors hired for public projects such as roads and neighbourhood renewal. The shortness of Edmonton's construction season has been exacerbated by repeat storms, and it can be hard to make up for weather-related delays, said Ryan Christensen, chair of the ECA's board. The association is calling for risk to be fairly allocated in construction contracts. "Contractors can manage labour, productivity, and construction methods, but no contractor can manage record rainfall or prolonged weather events," Christensen said. "When weather moves beyond what could have been reasonably anticipated, the focus should not be on which party can absorb the impact. It should be on how project partners work together to overcome that.

From builder to philanthropist: How entrepreneurial business owners can navigate wealth transitions, identity and purpose - RBC Wealth Management

Entrepreneurial business owners spend years, often decades, building something meaningful. But when they sell or transition their company, many face a fresh challenge: building a new sense of identity and purpose through philanthropy. “Entrepreneurs are builders who seek to create their own solutions,” says Kristina Savas, managing director at philanthropic advisory firm ViaNova. “Unlike those who inherited a family giving tradition, these entrepreneurs form their philanthropic identity from scratch as first-generation wealth creators. Naturally, many desire to give back to the communities that contributed to their success: the organizations, networks and people who made their growth possible. Yet turning the desire into meaningful philanthropy requires structure, support and a plan.”

Bryan Norcross: Tropical Storm Dolly is showing signs of already weakening

Tropical Storm Dolly battling hostile conditions as it treks across Atlantic After forming on Thursday, Tropical Storm Dolly is fighting a slew of hostile conditions from a brewing Super El Niño as it treks across the Atlantic Ocean. Strong winds and Saharan dust will significantly weaken Dolly, with forecasts expecting the system to become depression or gusty moisture surge rather quickly. Last updated at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2026. Tropical Storm Dolly finally formed yesterday out of the disturbance we've been following across the tropical Atlantic. It's speeding along at almost 25 mph, heading for an increasingly hostile atmospheric environment as it approaches the northeastern Caribbean islands tomorrow. The system is surrounded by Saharan dust and dry air cover, which is choking off Dolly's moisture. In addition, the mid- to upper-level winds blowing across the system have not allowed the thunderstorms to build around the center. Atlantic basin (Bryan Norcross)WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TROPICAL DEPRESSION, TROPICAL STORM AND HURRICANE? The National Hurricane Center is forecasting Dolly to remain a weak tropical storm into tomorrow.

When is wildfire smoke too dangerous for outdoor recess?

If wildfire smoke is blanketing your area, you might think there's an air quality threshold that will send your kids indoors. Well, there isn't. August 28, 2026Updated: August 28, 2026, 11:03 am EDTPublished: August 28, 2026, 10:57 am EDTWildfire smoke and schools: When is it too smoky for recess? Wildfire smoke and poor air quality can have serious consequences for children’s health; however, not all school districts abide by the same rules when it comes to sending kids outside or staying inside for recess. Imagine this: Two schools 5 miles apart are engulfed in the exact same cloud of wildfire smoke. At 11 a.m., one principal calls recess indoors. The other sends kids out to the playground. Who decides when the air is too harmful for children? The reason is that when it comes to air quality, there are recommendations, but no clear-cut national mandates that school districts have to abide by when it comes to air quality and outdoor time.(MORE: What you're actually breathing in wildfire smoke)The federal government and several states have published detailed air quality guidelines for schools, but in most places, they are entirely optional.

2026 lunar eclipse photos: Best images from North and South America

1/9The moon begins the penumbral stage during a partial lunar eclipse over the Israeli coastal city of Netanya on Aug. 28, 2026. (Photo by JACK GUEZ / AFP via Getty Images)If weather conditions or your sleep schedule got in the way of seeing Thursday night's total lunar eclipse, we've found some of the best images of what you missed. For those who were lucky enough to have clear skies, the celestial event was visible for a few hours Thursday night into early Friday morning for much of North and South America and parts of Europe. And as you can see in the slideshow at the top of this page, it did not disappoint. The moon was already in the spotlight. NASA sent the Artemis II astronauts on a record-breaking lunar flyby in April, the prelude to eventually landing on the surface and building a base swarming with people and robots over the next several years. “This is a great time to be part of the space program, right? We’re not slowing down,” NASA astronaut Jack Hathaway told The Associated Press from the International Space Station last week.

Seeds | SongYing Technology Invests Hundreds of Millions in Physical AI "OS" - Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich- Gasgoo Embodied Intelligence has learned that SongYing Technology, a physical AI enterprise, recently closed consecutive Series A and A1 financing rounds worth hundreds of millions of yuan. The rounds were led by CICC Capital and Wuhan Hongshan Capital, with participation from Shangrong Capital, Aosheng Technology, Gaoxin Capital, Shanghai Angel Society, Fengyu Zhu, and Joebei Capital. Existing investors, including Zhongxin Fund, doubled down. According to the company, this marks the third funding round completed in just six months. The new capital will primarily drive the iteration of its ORCA OS physical AI operating system, adaptation for domestic chips, developer ecosystem construction, and large-scale deployment in industrial scenarios. As the fervor around embodied intelligence continues to build, capital focus is gradually shifting from robot hardware and basic models to infrastructure like simulation training, data generation, and development toolchains. NVIDIA, leveraging its GPU and Omniverse software-hardware ecosystem, has erected formidable barriers in the physical AI sector.

Severe storm risk for parts of Ontario, Quebec Thursday, tornadoes possible

A cold front is set to move across Ontario and Quebec on Thursday, bringing the potential for severe thunderstorms. Ample moisture from a lifting warm front in the morning will combine with a cold front by early afternoon to trigger storm development. SEE ALSO: This week's Full Moon will produce a 'nearly-total' lunar eclipse in the skyKeep an eye out for weather alerts or warnings throughout the day, as the severe weather environment will build with daytime heating. Severe thunderstorm threat builds through ThursdayThe most significant activity is expected to occur east of the St. Lawrence River, particularly in the Eastern Townships. Conditions with high instability and wind shear could produce hazards such as strong winds and hail, potentially up to the size of quarters. There is also a risk of rotating storms, especially near the international border and stretching toward Quebec City, where shear and instability remain elevated. Key threats include heavy rainfall, large hail, and strong wind gusts. The risk of one or two tornadoes cannot be ruled out, particularly in the areas near the border and the Eastern Townships.

There’s something alive in fog — and it’s eating pollution

Fog is alive with bacteria that eat pollution, new study findsThere’s something living inside of fog. Yes, really, and this new study just discovered it. Fog is actually full of so much life that the researchers liken it to a vast aquatic ecosystem unto itself. What is fog? To start with the basics, fog is basically just a cloud that is low to the ground: water vapor that has condensed or frozen to form tiny droplets or crystals in the air. The most common form of fog is known as radiation fog, and that’s what these researchers collected samples of to test in their study. It typically occurs on clear nights as the ground cools the moist air immediately above it. Studying fog isn't easy, especially if we want to know how the bacteria in the air changes over the course of hours. We’d want to try to sample the same air before, during and after the fog appears, but wind can move everything around. That’s why this specific type of more still and stagnant fog was used. BC and Alberta, the provinces where wildfire losses historically hit property insurance hardest, have seen well below average fire activity Canada is tracking toward its fourth-worst wildfire season in recorded history, with more than 40,000 square kilometres burned so far - an area close to the size of Nova Scotia - according to federal officials. Yet property and casualty insurers say the financial impact has remained within manageable bounds. The reason is geography, and it is the most important fact in this year's wildfire picture for any broker advising clients on wildfire-exposed property.
