Description

The victims of Saturday's deadly fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta were remembered during a moment of silence in the House of Commons before party leaders expressed their condolences for those who died and were injured. Prime Minister Mark Carney began his Monday remarks, saying the House was meeting “united in grief," adding, “This loss touches every corner of our nation." The four soldiers killed have been identified as: Sgt. Morgan Wong, Pte. Shaun Farrell, Pte. Aida Goulding and Pte. Hayden Lykkemark. Joining Parliament virtually, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre — who is the MP for Battle River-Crowfoot, where the military base is situated — said he remembered meeting Goulding when celebrating Canada Day at the base. Poilievre called him, "Strong, handsome, polite, a real gentleman,” before sharing the soldier's mother's words of tribute. Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet and Green Party leader Elizabeth, too, stood in the House of Commons paying tribute to the fallen and the 39 others injured over the weekend. The former offered a rare comment in English, with the latter breaking down mid-speech. The leaders have urged Canadians, especially those within the riding and Alberta, to donate blood, if able, to help the wounded troops — 19 of whom remain in critical condition, Carney said.
