Description
The Trump administration has preemptively filed a lawsuit seeking to block certification of Alaska’s US Senate election if the Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan loses in the state which could decide the balance of power in the Senate. The lawsuit represents the latest attempt of the Trump Justice Department to insert itself in the administration of elections, running up against the minimal role the Constitution gives the Executive Branch to unilaterally get involved in running the vote. It alleges that the presence of a candidate named Daniel J. Sullivan could confuse voters and wants a court to potentially delay the certification of the election if Sen. Sullivan is defeated next month. CNN's Gabe Cohen has details on the "unprecedented" lawsuit. Also, former federal prosecutor Berit Berger says the DOJ's case has "factual and legal issues," plus political strategists Melik Abdul and Tre Easton give their takes. 0:00 CNN's Gabe Cohen has details on Trump DOJ's lawsuit 3:29 Does the Department of Justice have a real case here? 5:24 Trump says he told the DOJ to sue Alaska 6:04 Republican strategist on why he doesn't support the lawsuit Watch 24/7 live news with CNN Headlines: https://bit.ly/4eIvlTr Stream more on CNN with an All Access subscription: https://cnn.it/4AZMu54 #Trump #Election #News
