New York City passes bill to ban horse carriages #shorts

Description

Lawmakers voted on Thursday to ban horse-drawn carriage rides in New York City by the summer of 2028. The tourist attraction has been a staple in Central Park for more than 150 years but has faced increased scrutiny recently over safety concerns posed to horses and humans alike. Calls to ban the rides increased significantly after Romanch Mahajan, an 18-year-old from India, was killed after falling from his carriage while visiting New York with his family in June. If signed into law, “Romanch’s Law” will now prohibit new licenses for horse drawn cabs, ban the carriage operations by June of 2028, prohibit the sale of the horses for slaughter or to other cab operations and require the development of a program to help transition drivers to other employment. Industry opposition to the legislation grew in recent days, and Transport Workers Union International – the umbrella organization for the local union representing the workers – called for financial compensation for the carriage drivers who spend thousands on horses, carriages and city-issued license medallions. The bill will likely face legal challenges. Watch PBS News for daily, breaking and live news, plus special coverage. We are home to PBS News Hour, ranked the most credible and objective TV news show.
