Anthropic bans users from ‘needless abusive or cruel behavior’ towards Claude - The Guardian

Anthropic has barred users from exhibiting “sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior” toward its models, as the company’s leaders continue to ponder machine consciousness. The Verge first reported the change in policy. A spokesperson for Anthropic, which is behind the AI chatbot Claude, did not immediately respond to an inquiry about what could be considered “abusive or cruel”. In an online user policy, the San Francisco-based company noted that its ban would not apply to common user frustrations, model testing or “dark creative themes”. Anthropic’s usage policy previously contained restrictions on abusive conduct. The company’s large language models have the ability to end a conversation if a user is being persistently harmful. When that feature rolled out last August, the company framed it as a safeguard for AI’s welfare. “We remain highly uncertain about the potential moral status of Claude and other LLMs, now or in the future. However, we take the issue seriously, and alongside our research program we’re working to identify and implement low-cost interventions to mitigate risks to model welfare, in case such welfare is possible.

Firan Technology Group charged into this earnings print with the stock already hot. The share price climbed roughly 60% over the past month and just under 30% in the last week, so expectations were stretched. Q3 revenue reached CA$64.1 million and net income hit CA$10.0 million, both record levels, while trailing net profit margin improved to 10.3% from 7.5% a year earlier. The market is now deciding whether this surge in profitability justifies a P/E of 36.3x or reflects investors leaning too hard into momentum. Study in The Lancet suggests AI could improve patient-physician relationships. - blog.google

Can AI safely assess patients’ needs before they step into a doctor’s office? A study led by researchers at Google and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and published in The Lancet today, offers an encouraging first look. As Google’s first-ever publication in the main journal of The Lancet, this research marks a significant milestone. In a real-world clinical study at BIDMC’s ambulatory primary care clinic, 98 patients consulted AMIE, our research diagnostic AI chatbot, ahead of urgent care visits. Supervising physicians monitored the interactions in real time, and not a single conversation needed to be interrupted based on predefined safety criteria. And clinicians reported that the AI summaries helped them prepare for visits in 75% of cases and influenced their approach to care in more than half. AMIE’s differential diagnoses also matched the doctors’ final diagnoses 90% of the time. While larger clinical trials are needed to assess patient-facing AI at scale, the findings suggest the potential for AI to enhance the patient-physician relationship and ease the strain on healthcare workers.

Rising oil prices, falling technology stocks and reversing bond yields keep Wall Street unsettled - BNN Bloomberg

BNN Bloomberg is Canada’s definitive source for business news dedicated exclusively to helping Canadians invest and build their businesses. NEW YORK — Some sharp reversals kept financial markets unsteady on Thursday, as oil prices rose and U. S. stock indexes finished mixed. The S&P 500 fell 0.5 per cent for a second straight loss after setting its all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 51 points, or 0.1 per cent, and the Nasdaq composite fell 1.3 per cent as technology stocks took particularly hard hits. Stocks felt pressure from a 4.1 per cent rise in the price for a barrel of Brent crude oil, the international standard, to US$104.28. It’s been pinballing between US$96 and nearly US$110 over the last month on uncertainty about when the war with Iran will allow the global energy industry to return to normal. S&P 500 market updates hereBrent got to nearly US$106 in the morning before President Donald Trump sent its price veering after saying “productive discussions” are happening with Iran and that the U. S. military would not attack it before the upcoming U. S. elections in November. That briefly sent Brent toward US$103 before it eventually turned back upward.
