Empowering quantum information technology via photonic integrated circuits: a multi-team joint review on key routes to scalable quantum systems - EurekAlert!

image: Optoelectronic integrated chip for quantum information processing. Electric signals drive on-chip optical modulation units to alter photon phases, enabling quantum state preparation, interference and transformation. Optoelectronic co-integrated devices are monolithically assembled on a single substrate to build scalable hardware for quantum information processing. "For a long time, we have recognized that opto-electronic hybrid integration serves as a core enabling technology advancing photonic quantum technologies," said Professor Xifeng Ren, one of the corresponding authors of this review. "Heterogeneous integration can combine the strengths of diverse material platforms. Nevertheless, practical challenges including coordinated operation of various devices, cryogenically compatible processes, and packaging and manufacturing have persistently limited the overall chip performance. Most previous studies focused on breakthroughs of individual components, lacking a panoramic summary of the entire technological chain. "
