Finding Renée Richards: the complicated past and present of a trans sports pioneer - The Guardian

It was a story that dominated tennis headlines back in 1977: Dr Renée Richards, an ophthalmologist who excelled as a male amateur player before a sex-change operation, was suing for the right to play in the women’s draw of the US Open. Where did Richards go for legal assistance? None other than Roy Cohn. Better known for prosecuting suspected communists during the red scare and mentoring Donald Trump, Cohn turned his attention to fighting for Richards’s inclusion. His firm successfully argued the case – part of the narrative of a new biography, Finding Renée Richards: The Groundbreaking Story of Tennis’s Trans Pioneer by Julie Kliegman. “The lawsuit was really significant,” Kliegman says. “Obviously, clearly, it was very significant for Renée. But the decision was limited to her, as opposed to setting a precedent for trans people going forward.”For Kliegman – a sports journalist who is trans and non-binary – the project offered a chance to reexamine a 50-year-old cause célèbre and the topic of inclusion for trans people, in sports and in wider society, then and now. “There are a lot of parallels,” Kliegman says.

The Stanchies: Despite growing pains on defence, Canucks battle valiantly in 3-2 loss to Islanders - Canucks Army

The Stanchies: Despite growing pains on defence, Canucks battle valiantly in 3-2 loss to IslandersGood news, everyone! The Vancouver Canucks didn’t give up five or more goals on the night, as they managed to keep things close in a 3-2 loss to Bo Horvat and the New York Islanders. Which part of you might be thinking that sounds a tad bit snarky, but honestly, it’s not meant to be. If you want a tough market, merely glance over Philadelphia and their reaction to the start of the Flyers season and something tells me Rick Tocchet might have a new outlook on the “harsh spotlight” of Vancouver. Did I ever think Saddam Hussein analogies would become part of the outlook of a hockey franchise? I can’t say that I did. All things considered, though, this was a fantastic result for the Canucks. The process for the most part was quite good throughout the game, resulting in a pretty evenly matched affair. This felt like a nice reprieve for a team still wondering how the previous beatings handed out by the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes were meant to raise morale. In contrast to those games, this contest felt like a matchup between two teams that belonged in the same league.

Sports Editors Weekly | Is there reason for concern after Penn State men’s hockey 0-2 start - The Daily Collegian

Editor’s Note: Sports Editors Weekly is a dueling column written by Collegian Sports Editors Gianna Dowling and Myles Hannak. It aims to provide timely debate on Penn State sports performance and news each week. A year ago, Penn State fell short of expectations after a highly anticipated men’s hockey season highlighted by the addition of then-future No. 1 overall NHL Draft pick Gavin McKenna. Despite lower expectations this season, the Nittany Lions entered the year ranked No. 17 in Division I. However, the start to the blue and white’s season looked similar to the end of its last, as it dropped its first two games to then-No. 16 UConn and Sacred Heart. Following its 0-2 start, Penn State has dropped out of the USCHO rankings for the first time since Nov. 18, 2024. This raises the question — should there be concern for Guy Gadowsky and his squad? Gianna Dowling: No need to fret yetThe most memorable season to date for the Nittany Lions was the 2024-25 campaign, when they reached the Frozen Four for the first time in program history. However, fans may also remember that this season was far from perfect for Gadowsky’s squad, especially at the beginning.
