Seven unexpected players put in opportunistic roles to start 2026-27 - Daily Faceoff

We’re a couple weeks into the NHL season, and while we’re still several more from the point where we can really react to what has happened, we can still be proactive. The easiest way to do that is by looking at how teams have deployed players in the early going. While a player’s usage can always change, how they are deployed and who they play alongside can significantly impact their performance. Many teams took the predictable route with their lineups, using their six best forwards in the top six and their four best defensemen in the top four. But every now and then, teams throw us a curveball, and a surprising player ends up playing with some elite talent.

Maple Leafs coach Hiller not satisfied with road trip - TSN

The Maple Leafs lost 5-4 to the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. Wednesday is a travel day for the team with no media availability. The Leafs managed to break even on a challenging road trip, but Jim Hiller is not satisfied. “No. No. No. No,” the coach said. “No, I’m not.”When the Leafs left Toronto for games against the defending Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights, defending Presidents’ Trophy winning Colorado Avalanche and a fast-rising Utah Mammoth team, three points seemed like it would be a good result. So, why was Hiller left with a bitter taste in his mouth as he prepared to fly home? “Well, because we want to win,” he explained. “I mean, we could’ve got five points. So, when [you] say, ‘Are we good with three?’ No, not really. If you would’ve said, ‘Are you happy with five?’ We would’ve said, ‘Absolutely.’”The Leafs certainly had their chances to gain more points. Toronto squandered a 3-0 lead en route to a shootout loss in Vegas to open the trip. After an impressive win in Denver, the Leafs fell into a three-goal hole in Utah before mounting a comeback and coming painfully close to nabbing at least one point against the Mammoth.

Phillies re-hiring Don Mattingly will raise a John Schneider question for Blue Jays - Jays Journal

After a weird series of will he or won’t he, Don Mattingly is back with the Philadelphia Phillies. The NL East club announced the return on Wednesday (Oct. 14), with Mattingly locked into a new two-year contract that runs through the 2028 season. For Toronto Blue Jays fans, the announcement naturally brings the conversation back to Mattingly's time in Toronto. He spent three seasons as the club’s bench coach and offensive co-ordinator from 2023 to 2025, helped guide the Blue Jays to the 2025 World Series and became one of John Schneider’s most trusted voices. One year after Mattingly left, Philadelphia has decided it wants more of what Toronto let walk out the door. That does not automatically mean the Blue Jays kept the wrong manager. It does, however, make the question harder to ignore after the two clubs travelled in opposite directions during the 2026 season. Don Mattingly gave the Phillies exactly what they needed to turnaround their season in 2026Philadelphia was 9-19 when Mattingly replaced Rob Thomson in late April. The Phillies went 79-55 under their interim manager, playing at a .590 clip and posting the fourth-best record in the majors the rest of the way.
