Elliotte Friedman reveals Maple Leafs’ plans after Chris Tanev injury - Editor In Leaf

There has been plenty of talk regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs’ plans amid the mess that has become the Chris Tanev injury. But according to insider Elliotte Friedman, fans shouldn’t expect a massive move anytime soon. In the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the notable insider discussed the Maple Leafs' plans for dealing with the Chris Tanev situation, summing up the strategy in a single sentence. “I think their hope is play through this, this week and see where they are over the next little bit.”The statement suggests that GM John Chayka, while he’s certainly seeing what’s out there, isn’t really compelled to pull the trigger on a major move at this juncture. It seems the expectation is that the current blue line can keep things together, thereby precluding the need for a reactionary move. That’s why the next batch of games will determine if there’s a need for a move sooner rather than later. Of course, everything depends on Tanev’s health. If there’s no indication that he will be returning reasonably soon, circumstances may force Chayka’s hand to do something. Chayka swinging big for next Maple Leafs moveFriedman did point out something interesting.

Report: College Football Playoff nearing deal to expand to 24 teams - theScore

The College Football Playoff is nearing a deal to expand to 24 teams, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel and Heather Dinich. The new format would be implemented in 2027 and is reportedly pending final approvals. The College Football Playoff has used a 12-team format since the 2024 season. The 24-team format is expected to eliminate Power 4 conference championship games and start the season a week earlier, Thamel and Dinich report. The tournament would award 19 at-large bids and include the four Power 4 conference champions as determined by each league and the highest-ranked Group of 6 program. Under the current proposal, teams ranked No. 1-8 would reportedly receive a first-round bye and host a home game in the next round. The tournament expanded to 12 teams after a 2014-23 run in which only four teams competed. The College Football Playoff management committee met in September to begin discussing another potential expansion. "The CFP has decided to move forward in its evaluation of potential playoff expansion to 24 teams by beginning a media rights discussion with ESPN," the committee said in an early September statement.

Eight early-season stats that actually matter in 2026-27 NHL season - Daily Faceoff

Often, the numbers lie to us when the NHL calendar hasn’t yet exited October. As of Week 3 in the 2025-26 season, the Chicago Blackhawks held down a playoff spot. They missed the big dance by 18 points. Recency bias could’ve steered you wrong if you thought they were suddenly a competitive team after half a dozen games. It’s thus difficult to understand which early-season statistics we should take seriously. But there are paths toward doing so. Some numbers might confirm hunches we had going into the season. Others are backed by some underlying data, positive or negative, which can tell us what and what not to believe.

Jets D Morrissey now week-to-week with upper-body injury, no surgery required - TSN

Published: October 15, 2026 at 1:19p.m. EDTThe Winnipeg Jets have updated defenceman Josh Morrissey’s status to week-to-week after he was previously labelled day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Jets head coach Scott Arniel said Thursday that Morrissey still will not require surgery on the injury. Morrissey was first hurt in last week’s 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche when he missed a bodycheck and went straight into the boards. He appeared to be holding his right hand as he left the ice. The 31-year-old has three assists in four games this season after recording 55 points in 77 games last season. The Jets are off to a 4-1-1 start to the season despite being without star netminder Connor Hellebuyck, who is suspended without pay for failure to report, and more recently Morrissey. Winnipeg will visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.

Eagles QB Hurts ruled out vs. Panthers with blood clot - TSN

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers due to a superficial blood clot in his calf, the team announced Thursday. Hurts was listed as a full participant in Friday's practice before the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a calf injury. He had no injury designation for Sunday's game in London. The Eagles released a statement detailing the process that led to the discovery of the blood clot. "On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen visited the training room after practice requesting treatment for his calf," the team said. "He informed the medical staff he had been cleated during the Rams game on October 4th. This was his first treatment session for the calf injury following the game, after having practiced in full both Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, Jalen received treatment, practiced in full, and was added to the practice report. "Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday following the team's flight to London and walkthrough. The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot.

Things are spiraling out of control for the Philadelphia Flyers, and when that happens, trade rumors start to spin up. The Flyers have yet to make any real impactful moves, instead opting to sign veteran free agent Michael Bunting and swapping depth forwards to call up Jack Studnicka for Carl Grundstrom. A trade could be in the cards, with Danny Briere reportedly receiving a lot of calls from general managers around the league, but that remains to be seen.

Hurts won't play vs. Panthers due to superficial blood clot - theScore

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts won't play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers due to a superficial blood clot, the team announced Thursday. Hurts sought treatment for a calf injury last Thursday after being cleated in an Oct. 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams. He was diagnosed with a blood clot in his calf in London on Saturday after an ultrasound. The quarterback was cleared to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars and scheduled to undergo a follow-up ultrasound. Imaging performed Wednesday "revealed movement in the small blood clot. "The team is still determining the appropriate course of treatment and did not provide a return timeline. "It was a very unique experience, to say the least," Hurts told reporters Wednesday when asked about dealing with his calf injury in London, according to 94WIP. "I don't want to get into the details kind of leading up to the game and whatnot. But I got nicked up in the Rams game. "Tanner McKee is currently listed as the Eagles' backup quarterback. Fifth-round rookie Cole Payton is the other signal-caller on the roster after the team released Andy Dalton last week.
