Stampeders not in control of their CFL playoff destiny as they visit Lions on TSN - TSN

TORONTO — The Calgary Stampeders will be playing for much more than the season series with the B. C. Lions on Saturday night. Calgary (8-9) hosts B. C. (10-6) with the two teams having split their previous two contests this season. The Lions can cement a home playoff game with a victory. Calgary doesn't control its playoff fate. It can neither clinch a post-season berth with a victory nor be eliminated from contention with a loss, thanks to last week's 33-28 setback to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. That loss gave Winnipeg the season series with Calgary 2-1. The Bombers split their series with Saskatchewan 1-1 but have a better point differential in those two contests, giving them the tiebreaker with the Riders. If Calgary beats B. C., there exists the possibility of a tie among three teams at 9-9 in the West Division. The tiebreaker would be combined head-to-head records involving the tied teams. Winnipeg would get third based upon a 3-2 record, Saskatchewan would be fourth (2-2) while Calgary (2-3) would finish fifth and out of the playoffs. If the Stampeders and Riders were to end the season with identical records, Calgary would finish ahead of Saskatchewan on point differential.

Jon Rahm Gives Up Remainder of $300M LIV Golf Deal as Part of Separation Agreement - Bleacher Report

Richard Heathcote/Getty ImagesIt appears that Jon Rahm was willing to do anything to get out of his LIV Golf contract, even if it meant leaving a massive amount of money on the table. Per ESPN's Mark Schlabach, as part of Rahm's separation agreement with LIV Golf for the return of his exclusive name, image and likeness rights, the 31-year-old gave up the remainder of his $300 million deal. Schlabach noted that "it is believed that Rahm was owed more than $100 million over the remainder of his contract," which he signed in December 2023 after leaving the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf.

GDB 7.0: Oilers face their toughest test of the season against Mammoth (7 PM MT, SNW)The Edmonton Oilers play their first non-Pacific Division opponent tonight, the Utah Mammoth, and many around the NHL are wondering if the Oilers’ 5-0-1 start is due to playing six teams from the Pacific. It is a fair question considering how they fared against teams in the other three divisions last season. The Oilers were 16-7-3 against the Pacific. Edmonton went 6-9-1 against the Metro teams. The Oilers didn’t have a winning record (more wins than losses) against any of the other three divisions, but here’s a quick look at how they fared in 2025 and 2024.2025:

Canucks’ Räty clears NHL waivers, will report to AHL Abbotsford - Canucks Army

After being placed on NHL waivers on Wednesday, Vancouver Canucks forward Aatu Räty has cleared waivers and will report to AHL Abbotsford. Raty clearedRäty, 23, has appeared in just four of the Canucks’ eight games this season. He scored into the empty net to ice the game in his season debut against the Calgary Flames, but has since been held off the scoresheet. The Finnish centre has served as the fourth-line centre in all his games this season, and his ice time reflects that, with sub-10 minutes in three of those contests. He has the lone point, four shots on goal, two penalty minutes, and a minus-two rating, while averaging 10:10 this season. Known as a faceoff ace, Räty won 56.8% of his draws this season. The 6’2″ centreman found himself further down the depth chart now with the return of Filip Chytil tonight against the Florida Panthers. Similarly, we saw the same at Canucks training camp. Once viewed as the Canucks’ sure-fire fourth-line centre to begin the year, Räty found himself centring a line with Ty Mueller and Trey Fix-Wolansky, two forwards destined to start the season in the AHL Abbotsford.

Blackfish: Romani opens strong, Cootes continues to impress and Malhotra shows his offensive potential - Canucks Army

Blackfish: Romani opens strong, Cootes continues to impress and Malhotra shows his offensive potentialWelcome back to Blackfish: our weekly Vancouver Canucks prospect report. As always, check out this week’s episode of the Blackfish Prospect Show, where Tyson Cole and I break down the latest from the Canucks prospect pool. Let’s kick off this week’s updates with the organization’s third-overall pick from the 2026 NHL Draft, who enjoyed himself quite the weekend. Well, as good as you can get without actually finding the scoresheet, that is. Now, we must preface this entire segment by acknowledging that this game was merely an exhibition contest against a lower-tier opponent in Brown University. That said, Caleb Malhotra did just about everything he could short of scoring. Caleb Malhotra led all Boston University skaters with over 19 minutes of ice time in last night's exhibition game. After watching back the game tape, I thought he had a very strong outing with six of his 10 shot came at 5v5.

Elliotte Friedman reveals Maple Leafs’ plans after Chris Tanev injury - Editor In Leaf

There has been plenty of talk regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs’ plans amid the mess that has become the Chris Tanev injury. But according to insider Elliotte Friedman, fans shouldn’t expect a massive move anytime soon. In the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the notable insider discussed the Maple Leafs' plans for dealing with the Chris Tanev situation, summing up the strategy in a single sentence. “I think their hope is play through this, this week and see where they are over the next little bit.”The statement suggests that GM John Chayka, while he’s certainly seeing what’s out there, isn’t really compelled to pull the trigger on a major move at this juncture. It seems the expectation is that the current blue line can keep things together, thereby precluding the need for a reactionary move. That’s why the next batch of games will determine if there’s a need for a move sooner rather than later. Of course, everything depends on Tanev’s health. If there’s no indication that he will be returning reasonably soon, circumstances may force Chayka’s hand to do something. Chayka swinging big for next Maple Leafs moveFriedman did point out something interesting.

Report: College Football Playoff nearing deal to expand to 24 teams - theScore

The College Football Playoff is nearing a deal to expand to 24 teams, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel and Heather Dinich. The new format would be implemented in 2027 and is reportedly pending final approvals. The College Football Playoff has used a 12-team format since the 2024 season. The 24-team format is expected to eliminate Power 4 conference championship games and start the season a week earlier, Thamel and Dinich report. The tournament would award 19 at-large bids and include the four Power 4 conference champions as determined by each league and the highest-ranked Group of 6 program. Under the current proposal, teams ranked No. 1-8 would reportedly receive a first-round bye and host a home game in the next round. The tournament expanded to 12 teams after a 2014-23 run in which only four teams competed. The College Football Playoff management committee met in September to begin discussing another potential expansion. "The CFP has decided to move forward in its evaluation of potential playoff expansion to 24 teams by beginning a media rights discussion with ESPN," the committee said in an early September statement.
