College Football Playoff picture set for shake up with big-time clashes on deck Saturday - TSN

For the second time in three weeks, we’ve got six ranked matchups in college football. In Provo, BYU hosts Notre Dame in the first ever top-10 matchup at LaVell Edwards Stadium, and Ohio State visits up north in a game that features the national champions from the past two years – additionally, the first time a pair of top five teams have ever met in Bloomington. Auburn and Georgia get together in a historic SEC rivalry, and Alabama and Tennessee renew acquaintances in a game that will push the loser to the brink of the playoff picture. In the ACC, Florida State travels south to Miami, with potentially bigger consequences for Mike Norvell if the Seminoles meet their expected fate. Some of these games are personal, too. Arch Manning is reeling from last week’s Red River meltdown, and also has an unsettled score with Florida after a costly loss last October. Missouri is in Oxford to face Ole Miss, which certainly means something to Austin Simmons, who was the Rebels’ starter last season until an injury left him as the forgotten man in Trinidad Chambliss’ ascent to superstardom.

Four standout performers from the Raptors’ 120-122 loss to the Knicks - Raptors Republic

If there’s anything to take away from a preseason loss, it’s that the Toronto Raptors are ready to play real basketball. Against a New York Knicks squad that was humiliated by these same Raptors only a few nights earlier, Toronto outperformed the defending champions for much of the evening. Though neither team treated it as seriously as a regular season game, this was about as close as it gets for the preseason. Both squads had starters reach the 30-minute threshold, and both teams had moments of brilliance — and real effort — from their stars. But there were four Raptors who rose head and shoulders above the rest.1. RJ BarrettI called Barrett the team’s running back in the Quick Reaction, and that covers his role. He moves the chains in a variety of ways. He’s physical, likely the most physical player on the offensive end. He drives, finishes, draws free throws, cuts, hits the offensive glass, even hits triples. He finished with 21 points on 12 shots, and he will hit that level of efficiency on many nights this year. Few teams have horses in the wing-defence stables to guard Kawhi Leonard and Scottie Barnes and still have a stopper left over for Barrett.

WNBA finals 2026 predictions: Is Angel Reese about to win a Dream title? - The Guardian

The Valkyries are here because ...… of big dreams, excellent defense and smart roster construction. This franchise aimed big when it entered the league and has been more than rewarded. (An $850m valuation, $100m in revenue … next a championship?) After reaching the postseason in year one, they made the right offseason additions, trusted in players written off elsewhere, and put together what may have been the greatest defensive season in WNBA history. Ella Brockway… they’ve made a mockery of the conventional expansion timetable. Built around a best-in-class defensive efficiency, positional versatility and an unusually deep rotation, Golden State have become far more than the sum of their parts. Gabby Williams supplies the star power, Veronica Burton the steady hand and Natalie Nakase the uncompromising identity. Bryan Armen Graham… the entire organization believed in this team before they even had a team. The Valkyries did so much correctly – they built the facilities, they hired Nakase, they showed the team and fans that they were all in.

All hands on wreck: Flyers’ winless start is a team-wide disaster - On Pattison

Senators G Ullmark says dominant start hasn’t come easy: ‘It’s always a battle every night’ - TSN

OTTAWA — Eight games is a small sample size but there’s no denying the Ottawa Senators are playing with confidence. The Senators improved to 6-2-0 after posting a 2-1 shootout win over the New York Islanders Thursday night. Perhaps most impressive, and not coincidental, is the play of Linus Ullmark who is 6-0 on the season with a .949 save percentage. Going back to last year, Ullmark is riding a 10-game winning streak. When mentioned to Ullmark, he shook his head as though it was strange to string wins from two seasons together. However, he said he’s feeling pretty good but still has a few things to clean up. “It’s always a battle every night,” admitted Ullmark. “Always a grind. Good players, good teams can’t really relax at any point during the game and that’s why I say it’s up and down.”It’s a far cry from the goaltender who started last season looking like he was battling every puck. Ullmark was 2-3-1 after six games last season having allowed 23 goals. He’s given up seven so far.

Jalen Hurts' future in Philadelphia is now a question mark - TSN

Jalen Hurts has faced questions about his passing efficiency, willingness to run and leadership ability despite winning one Super Bowl MVP award and leading the Philadelphia Eagles to two NFC championships. He faces a challenge bigger and more serious than silencing critics and quieting fickle fans. Hurts has a blood clot in his calf and has to miss at least one game. His health is the top priority now. But the NFL is a business and Hurts’ availability for the remainder of the season is in doubt so it’s fair to wonder about his future in Philadelphia. The 28-year-old quarterback is in the middle of a $255 million, five-year contract that runs through 2028. However, his guaranteed money drops from $51.5 million this season to $22 million next year to zero in 2028. Because the Eagles didn’t restructure his contract to add more guaranteed money after this year, this was viewed as a make-or-break season for Hurts. It seems unfair that a player with Hurts’ resume needed to prove himself again but that’s been the narrative surrounding him since his college days. Hurts was famously benched by Nick Saban at halftime of the national championship game on Jan. 8, 2018.
