Stars sign veteran F Perron to one-year, $850,000 contract - TSN

The Dallas Stars announced Friday that the team has signed winger David Perron to a one-year, $850,000 contract. Perron, 38, finished last season with the Detroit Red Wings after he was acquired from the Ottawa Senators for a draft pick prior to the trade deadline. He had 13 goals and 28 points in 65 games split between the Senators and Red Wings last season. The six-foot winger is coming off a two-year, $4 million contract that carried a cap hit of $2 million. Drafted 26th overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2007, Perron has 332 goals and 812 points in 1,239 games split between the Blues, Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, Vegas Golden Knights, Red Wings, and Senators. A 19-year veteran of the NHL, Perron helped the Blues to their first Stanley Cup title in franchise history in 2019, recording seven goals and 16 points.

Red Wings owner Illitch says he made decision to remove Yzerman as GM, doesn’t rule out rebuild - TSN

Steve Yzerman announced in July that he would be stepping down from his position as general manager of the Detroit Red Wings to move into an advisor role. At the time, it was unclear whether Yzerman made the call himself, but team owner Chris Ilitch revealed Thursday he made the “difficult but necessary decision” to demote the franchise legend. Ilitch spoke to Max Bultman of The Athletic on the state of the franchise, including his reaction to chants of “Sell the team” being heard at Little Caesars Arena. “Fans absolutely have the right to tell us how they feel,” Ilitch said prior to a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, moving the team to 2-3-2 on the season. “This is their team. So, I understand fan frustration. I share it, to be frank. My thoughts are that fans want to see our team win on the ice, and I do too. And as the person that’s accountable for this franchise, it’s why I made the change (in general managers), and it’s why I’m so deliberate in our search.”The Red Wings moved Shawn Horcoff into the role of interim general manager in September, but the former NHL forward has seemingly been behind the eight-ball since being promoted.

Does Danny Briere regret the trades the Flyers didn’t make? - Broad Street Hockey

This summer was all about taking the next step forward for the Philadelphia Flyers. What they actually did was a lean forward instead of the leap that they wanted. Does the team, and more specifically general manager Danny Briere, have any major regrets for not being able to pull it off? Years ago, the summer of 2026 was seen as the specific moment that the Flyers could feasibly go out and get a star so that they can have a leader up top with a whole lot of young talent and very good players complementing their skill. How realistic this idea was is still in question, but looking at the likes of Kirill Kaprizov, Kyle Connor, Adrian Kempe, Connor McDavid, and Jack Eichel, just to name a few of the best forwards on the planet right now who were set to become unrestricted free agents this past summer, it makes sense that they would at least aim for that possibility.

Babcock: Oilers ‘seeing who can play and who can’t‘ amidst early-season injuries - TSN

The Edmonton Oilers suffered their first regulation loss of the season against the Utah Mammoth on Thursday and realized there are still improvements to be made after a strong start. Mammoth captain Clayton Keller potted a pair of goals while forwards Logan Cooley and Nick Schmaltz had two points each as Utah defeated the Oilers 4-2 for their third straight win and sit atop the Central Division with a 6-2-0 record early in the season. After the game, Oilers head coach Mike Babcock praised the Mammoth’s play throughout their entire lineup and realized that his team needs some more depth. “They have a deep team and we’re going to have a deep team, too, but right now we’re not as deep and I thought that showed tonight,” Babcock told reporters after the game. “We needed our big boys. Obviously, I played them too much, but I thought we competed and put in a good effort. “I thought we worked. We played a pretty good team here tonight and I thought we we worked. The good thing for us is we’re getting to see everyone in the organization and we’re seeing who can play and who can’t. They’re getting a great opportunity to show that.

Oilers undermanned against Utah, trench warfare, and the referees take night off - Oilers Nation

The Edmonton Oilers returned home Thursday after a successful road trip to play the Utah Mammoth. Edmonton was 5-0-1 going into the matchup and 5-0-1 lifetime against their opponents. However, the Mammoth prevailed 4-2 for their first-ever win in the Alberta capital. It was a surprisingly physical affair, and the rematch will be eagerly anticipated. Utah faced an Edmonton team missing its entire second line, its third-line centre, a top-four defenceman, and its goalie. Jason Dickinson couldn’t go after warmups, so Filip Hallander moved up to second-line centre and Max Jones drew in on the fourth line. According to Mike Babcock, Dickinson didn’t miss the game because of his previous ankle injury. The Mammoth are a deep team, roll four lines, and had a huge advantage over the home team tonight. This was especially evident in the first period as Utah took the play to the Oilers. Edmonton’s depth players had their moments, though, including a great rush by Max Jones in the opening frame. He showed surprising speed, barreling down the right wing, cutting in on goal and getting a good chance.

Gameday: Raptors @ Pistons, October 16th - Raptors Republic

The Toronto Raptors will play their final preseason game against the Detroit Pistons tonight, and we will not see them suit up again until their season begins on October 21st against the Chicago Bulls. Toronto’s preseason has been full of exciting moments over their last two games, and has given the Raptor faithful plenty to be excited about as the season rapidly approaches. With this being the second leg of a back-to-back it remains to be seen if Toronto’s starters will suit up again, but if they don’t it will give the younger players on the roster a chance for some extended minutes. Raptors OutlookRecord: 2-2Offensive Rating: 116.2 (6th)Raptors previous results: New York Knicks vs Toronto Raptors  – 120 – 122 LToronto’s offense during this preseason has looked potent and refined and it has been easy to see the benefits that adding Kawhi Leonard has brought and he has been fully bought into the movement system that Darko Rajakovic has built. Scottie Barnes has looked comfortable as well in this offense and he and Leonard have shown that they can coexist on the floor together in their limited minutes on the floor thus far.

Are Leafs too messy – on the ice and behind the bench – to make playoffs? - Daily Faceoff

It was a night Kirill Marchenko says he’ll never forget. Who wouldn’t cherish scoring a hat trick in their eighth game playing for an Original Six franchise? But he couldn’t even muster a smile after the game Thursday night. Not when his Toronto Maple Leafs squandered a 4-2 divisional lead to their Atlantic Division rival Buffalo Sabres and fell 5-4 in overtime. In many ways, Thursday’s game was a microcosm of Toronto’s young season. The Leafs brought the Scotiabank Arena faithful to their feet early and often. Captain Auston Matthews, looking back to his superstar self, converted a deftly threaded Jack Roslovic pass to put Toronto ahead just 2:24 in. And Marchenko was spectacular, particularly on his first of three goals, a scintillating between-the-legs snipe on the power play.

College Football Playoff picture set for shake up with big-time clashes on deck Saturday - TSN

For the second time in three weeks, we’ve got six ranked matchups in college football. In Provo, BYU hosts Notre Dame in the first ever top-10 matchup at LaVell Edwards Stadium, and Ohio State visits up north in a game that features the national champions from the past two years – additionally, the first time a pair of top five teams have ever met in Bloomington. Auburn and Georgia get together in a historic SEC rivalry, and Alabama and Tennessee renew acquaintances in a game that will push the loser to the brink of the playoff picture. In the ACC, Florida State travels south to Miami, with potentially bigger consequences for Mike Norvell if the Seminoles meet their expected fate. Some of these games are personal, too. Arch Manning is reeling from last week’s Red River meltdown, and also has an unsettled score with Florida after a costly loss last October. Missouri is in Oxford to face Ole Miss, which certainly means something to Austin Simmons, who was the Rebels’ starter last season until an injury left him as the forgotten man in Trinidad Chambliss’ ascent to superstardom.
