Polymarket is banned in Ontario but there’s more than US$400K wagered on Toronto’s mayoral election - CP24

Published: October 20, 2026 at 6:04a.m. EDTBetting on the outcome of elections is illegal in Canada but there is still more than US$400,000 wagered on who will become the mayor of Toronto on a prediction platform that is currently banned in Ontario. As of late Monday afternoon, approximately US$426,000 had been wagered on the outcome of the Toronto mayoral election on Polymarket. Polymarket, it should be noted, is currently serving out a two-year ban in Ontario after its former and current operators were found to have violated the province’s security law in April 2025. On Kalshi, another prediction market platform, more than US$46,000 had been wagered on who will win the mayoral election on Oct. 26. Users can also bet on other election outcomes throughout Ontario. For the Mississauga election more than $24,000 had been wagered as of Monday afternoon. Polymarket and Kalshi both allow traders to buy and sell binary “yes” or “no” contracts speculating on the outcome of real-world events, including elections.

Ontario public-sector unions push province for workplace AI safeguards

Unions representing tens of thousands of public sector workers in Ontario are racing to inject artificial intelligence safeguards into multiple contract negotiations, Global News has learned, as workers express concerns about how Crown agencies plan to use the technology. The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), which represents more than 200,000 public sector workers, said language around the current or potential use of AI is being introduced at nearly every bargaining table across the province. “The implication of AI becomes more and more clear in almost every sector we represent,” said OPSEU President JP Hornick. “We have teams working on bargaining guides around AI in almost every area I can think of.”Hornick said among the top concerns are job losses, the replacement of job functions and employers potentially using AI to monitor work. East San Fernando Valley light rail line gets underway — five years behind schedule.

The San Fernando Valley is getting closer to its first commuter rail service in more than 70 years. Construction is set to begin this week on a 6.7-mile rail line linking Van Nuys and Pacoima. The nearly $4-billion project, which will run along Van Nuys Boulevard, will include 11 street-level stations and is projected to open in 2032, according to L. A. Metro, the Los Angeles County transit agency. The project is years behind schedule and billions of dollars over its initial estimated budget. Approved in 2018, construction was originally slated to start in 2021, with the line opening in 2027. The cost was projected at $1.3 billion. Metro officials, who broke ground on the project with Metro chair and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Monday, didn’t have an immediate response to questions about why the project had been delayed so long. The Metro board approved a budget increase in May as estimated construction costs rose, according to a board report. In a news release, the agency said funding sources for the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project included Measures R and M, two local sales tax measures for transit, and an $893-million grant from the federal government.

Horvath backs Raman in mayor's race, giving her a strong ally in the Valley and Westside

Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath will endorse Nithya Raman’s bid for mayor on Tuesday, giving the City Council member a boost in the battle for votes on the Westside and in the San Fernando Valley. The endorsement also gives Raman newfound clout in an area where her campaign has struggled: securing support from her fellow elected officials. Thirteen of her council colleagues have endorsed her opponent, Mayor Karen Bass, while a fourteenth — Councilmember Traci Park — said she is voting for the incumbent despite reservations. Horvath, whose district takes in 2 million people, said Raman will shake up the status quo, bringing a new approach to homelessness, housing affordability, emergency preparedness and other issues. “It’s been said that she doesn’t have many friends at City Hall, and I know what that feels like,” Horvath told The Times. “When you take on institutional inertia and decades of refusal to change, that kind of shake-up can feel disruptive to people.

Hundreds of thousands of potentially eligible Texas homeowners aren’t claiming their property tax savings - The Texas Tribune

DALLAS — When the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge opened more than a decade ago, it connected downtown Dallas to West Dallas, one of the poorest parts of the city. With the new bridge came a spike of new development interest in the predominantly Hispanic neighborhood, once largely cut off from the city’s urban core.

This Republican wants to represent Alabama’s 7th Congressional District. She doesn’t live there - WBHM

Republican Ammie Akin is running for Alabama’s 7th Congressional District, a district that stretches from part of Birmingham, across portions of Tuscaloosa County to the state’s western Black Belt. Since 2011 it’s been represented by Democrat Terri Sewell, who is running for reelection. Property and voting records show, and Akin’s campaign confirmed, that she lives in the 6th Congressional District. Her home is in unincorporated Jefferson County near the intersection of Interstate 459 and U. S. Highway 280. It is not illegal to run outside of one’s congressional district. The U. S. Constitution requires members of the House to be inhabitants of the state they represent but not the specific district. Still, it is not typical. “District 7 is the only district I want to run in and the reason for that is because that's the district I'm most equipped to run in because of my background and my resume,” Akin said. Akin has spent her career in educational settings. According to her LinkedIn profile, she began her career as a teacher at Hoover High School before spending about eight years with the Trussville City Schools.
