Published: October 20, 2026 at 6:04a.m. EDTBetting on the outcome of elections is illegal in Canada but there is still more than US$400,000 wagered on who will become the mayor of Toronto on a prediction platform that is currently banned in Ontario. As of late Monday afternoon, approximately US$426,000 had been wagered on the outcome of the Toronto mayoral election on Polymarket. Polymarket, it should be noted, is currently serving out a two-year ban in Ontario after its former and current operators were found to have violated the province’s security law in April 2025. On Kalshi, another prediction market platform, more than US$46,000 had been wagered on who will win the mayoral election on Oct. 26. Users can also bet on other election outcomes throughout Ontario. For the Mississauga election more than $24,000 had been wagered as of Monday afternoon. Polymarket and Kalshi both allow traders to buy and sell binary “yes” or “no” contracts speculating on the outcome of real-world events, including elections.

Mass. House Democrats reject Healey’s ‘gimmick’ proposal to suspend state gas tax

Healey argued that a two-month gas tax suspension was a “responsible thing to do” amid a surge in gas prices driven by the war in Iran. A gallon of regular gas cost, on average, $4.26 in Massachusetts as of Tuesday, according to AAA; that’s more than a dollar higher than this time a year ago. But the idea immediately received a cool reception on Beacon Hill, where Democratic lawmakers have blocked attempts to suspend the tax before. State Representative Aaron Michlewitz, a North End Democrat who chairs the House’s budget-writing committee, said he is still “very skeptical” that a gas tax suspension would provide “any real savings to folks that are struggling with the affordability crisis that we’re facing.”“I would call it a gimmick policy, and it sounds nice,” Michlewitz said. “But it’s not something that is going to actually, when you get down to the mechanics of it ... provide real savings.”Spokespeople for Healey and Minogue did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

Military safety rules urged early-morning training before deadly Wainwright fire

The Canadian military’s safety rules identify October as a high-risk month for grass fires at CFB Wainwright and recommend holding live-fire exercises early in the morning to minimize the risk of igniting a blaze, according to a document obtained by Global News. The details are contained in the military’s current Range Standing Orders for CFB Wainwright and raise new questions about the safety precautions in place before Saturday’s deadly blaze, which killed four Canadian soldiers and injured 39 others. The tragedy unfolded at about 4 p.m., amidst yellow alert warnings from Environment Canada about high winds, and as a forecasted cold front approached the base. The 139-page document also states that units conducting live-fire exercises between August and October should plan to shoot early in the morning, when fire danger is “normally low enough to permit the firing of most ammunition natures before approximately 1000 hrs.” Story continues below advertisement
