A day after huge riots in France, shock and recrimination

He also warned that “those who looted will have to pay back, and those who sought to bring down the Republic will be held accountable.”On Sunday, the violence and protests had largely subsided, apart from sporadic skirmishes and looting involving small numbers of rioters in Paris, as the unrest gave way to political finger pointing. Politicians from the far left to the far right criticized the government for a police response deemed too weak or ill-prepared, with some calling for Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez to resign. Nuñez told journalists Saturday that the police had not been understaffed, but that it was hard to contain rioters “when they’re scattered in small groups.”Saturday’s unrest, which led to nearly 2,400 arrests, caused widespread damage to several symbols of the state. Among them was a 19th-century city hall largely destroyed by fire in Limoges, a town in central France renowned for its porcelain. Nearly 1,000 police officers were injured, France’s Interior Ministry said Sunday, including seven suffering from serious injuries.

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. JB Pritzker’s presidential disaster request that was denied by the Federal Emergency Management Agency met the threshold for statewide disaster assistance, according to state documents. As Salem tourism skyrockets, busker community rallies around iconic tradition

“We love the tourists,” said Correen Demers, 50, better known in a gown of multicolored flowers as “Mother Nature of Salem.”“It’s just so much fun. The tips are just a bonus,” she added. Higher tourism numbers mean more people to entertain — but also fresh blood in the busking community. As a record number of new performers arrive in Salem, veteran buskers are banding together to protect the soul of their craft. Local business network Creative Collective is helping get things organized amid the huge crowds with a new pilot program that lets buskers rent a 5-by-5-foot area for a given day. “There [are] certain iconic folks [who] have spaces they love, so they can have them without getting into an argument with anyone,” said John Andrews, president of Creative Collective, a business support group for Essex County. Community feedback sparked the idea for rented busker spots. Andrews said he’d heard the concern that “as it’s become busier… people come from all over the world to be street performers.”A woman posed for a photo with an actor dressed as Michael Myers, the masked killer from the “Halloween” films, as fog swirled around them.

Cows roam Kansas City highway after trailer plunged off Missouri overpass, killing dozens of cattle - CBS News

Dozens of cattle spilled onto a street in Kansas City, Missouri, when a semitractor-trailer plunged off a highway overpass in the city's downtown area and onto a car early Sunday, shutting down some roads and setting off a search for the traumatized animals that survived. The accident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. and the roundup of surviving cattle continued into the early afternoon, authorities said. The driver of the truck and the driver of a vehicle the truck landed on sustained minor injuries and were treated at local hospitals, they said. Kansas City Police Sgt. Phil DiMartino said that between 45 and 60 of the 120 to 130 cattle carried by the truck were killed when the tractor-trailer overturned and fell from the westbound I-70 curve over SB I-35.
