, /CNW/ -- Far too many Canadians are struggling to find homes they can afford. Solving Canada's housing crisis requires immediate action to bring down costs, cut red tape, and build homes more quickly. The Government of Canada is stepping up with a bold new approach to build affordable housing across the country. We are focused on building great neighbourhoods that Canadians want to, and can afford to live in.
Central to that work, the Government of Canada has launched Build Canada Homes, which is helping increase the pace of affordable homebuilding. Build Canada Homes is also helping fight homelessness by building transitional and supportive housing – working with provinces, territories, municipalities, and Indigenous communities. It is building deeply affordable and community housing for low-income households and partnering with private market developers to build affordable homes for the Canadian middle class.

What would Alberta gain by leaving Canada – and what could it lose?

The route up the Widowmaker Arete, a 1,700ft wall in British Columbia, is deceptively described as “mostly easy slab climbing”, interspersed with “short steep sections that can include finger cracks” and “blocky face climbing”. It requires careful planning, and the right equipment. When 16-year-old Bryce Vincent Gowryluk found himself facing its sheer headwall last week, he had neither. He did, however, ask the AI chatbot Claude for directions. Last week, Gowryluk had to be rescued after those directions proved wildly incorrect, in the latest incident to raise questions about the growing reliance on digital maps for wilderness navigation. On Saturday morning, Gowryluk took a gondola up to the top of Grouse Mountain and, while ascending, asked Claude to plan a route to nearby Crown Mountain and back. After navigating scree and more than 2,000ft of elevation gain, the summit promises 360-degree panoramic views of Greater Vancouver, the Fraser valley and the Capilano watershed. Typically, the trek takes eight hours and hiking guides warn it is not for beginners.
Canada's federal government has committed funds to advance 200 internationally trained physicians (ITPs) along a fast track to Ontario licensing.
On October 7, 2026, Health Canada announced $20 million in funding to support expansion of Practice Ready Ontario (PRO), which allows ITPs to become licensed to practise family medicine through completing a 12-week clinical field assessment in place of the traditional two-year residency.
Our population is aging and fewer immigrants are arriving. Together, these changes are reshaping our economy. The changes affect how many people are working, what people consume and how much the economy can produce.
For more than 150 years, Canada’s population grew every single year. In 2025, population growth slowed to just 0.5%—the slowest rate of growth in more than a century. And it wasn’t a one-off. Slowing population growth is part of an emerging trend that will reshape how our entire economy works.
