Bill Gates: Technology is a world in need of governance - Vatican News

In an interview with Vatican News, former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates speaks about the potential dangers associated with the growth of artificial intelligence, and explains that it is a sector incapable of self-regulation that must therefore be guided by governments, noting that action must be taken to harness the opportunities AI offers in healthcare, education, and agriculture. “We are not paying enough attention to the risks” of artificial intelligence “and we’re not doing enough to minimize the harms. We are also not doing enough to take advantage of the current opportunities with AI,” says Bill Gates, cofounder and former CEO of Microsoft, in an interview Vatican News.

New UNESCO data: For every two teachers, the world needs one more - UNESCO

A new fact sheet released by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030 examines the status of teachers, including how teachers are valued, supported and paid, 60 years after the adoption of the landmark 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. The stakes are high: 58% of the teachers needed worldwide by 2030 will be replacements for those who leave the profession. The fact sheet shows where the losses are greatest: attrition rates are 7.2% in pre-primary education, 5.4% in secondary and 4.7% in primary. The fact sheet was released to mark World Teachers’ Day 2026, bringing together ministers, teachers and education experts at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris to discuss how to strengthen the profession. Co-convened by UNESCO, the International Labour Organization, UNICEF and Education International, the celebration took place under the theme “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures”. What can be doneThe fact sheet offers practical recommendations for governments and partners.

Athletics wishes it could scrub the women’s marathon world record – what can be done? | Sean Ingle - The Guardian

When Ruth Chepngetich annihilated the women’s marathon world record in Chicago two years ago today, NBC’s commentators compared it to the moon landing. “Bring it on Neil Armstrong!” cried one. “She has done things in this sport that we have not seen,” said another. “Unbelievable!”That was a word others reached for too after the Kenyan had crossed the line in 2hr 9min 56sec, a time that not only smashed the world record by 1min 57sec, but her personal best by a staggering five minutes. Afterwards she was asked by Robert Johnson of Let’s Run what her response was to those who believed she must be doping. “People must talk,” she replied. “I don’t know.”We know a lot more now. Because five months after that epic run, Chepngetich’s star came crashing down to earth. First she failed a doping test. Then she was banned for three years. These days people in the sport talk about her reluctantly, like a family member who has joined a mysterious cult. Yet her world record still stands because she passed a test after the race itself. What should we think of this? What are we allowed legally to say about this? And what, if anything, can be done about it?

A Multifaceted Journey to Tremblant during the PwC World Cup - Coupe du monde Tremblant PwC

After a few laps and scenic selfies from Tremblant’s summit, with the lake as a backdrop, we set off to find a spot to watch Mikaela race. We spent some time in the excitement of the crowd at the finish line before hiking up the slope to the Employee Section—an incredible perk Tremblant offered its staff to watch the event. The atmosphere was electric; people were in great spirits, national anthems filled the air, and everyone was cheering for the athletes. It was amazing to see so many different countries coming together to celebrate. “After working with Mikaela for years, I finally had the chance to cheer her on as she earned a bronze medal back on North American soil!”While Mikaela recovered, we celebrated. Jack, some coworkers, and I headed to one of the most renowned après-ski spots in the world—Le P’tit Caribou. Neon lights contrasted against the rustic wooden bars, a DJ played from inside a gondola, buckets of beers chilled on ice, and people who couldn’t speak each other’s languages somehow all knew the dance moves to “Y-M-C-A.” It was everything you imagine an après-ski party should be!

China reduced extreme poverty fast, but Indonesia hasn’t been far behind - Our World in Data

Data InsightsChina reduced extreme poverty fast, but Indonesia hasn’t been far behindOctober 13, 2026China is often the poster child for rapid reductions in poverty, and for good reason. In the early 1980s, over 90% of its population lived in extreme poverty, but by the early 2020s, that number had dropped to nearly zero. Some might assume that China is the only reason why global extreme poverty has declined. But that’s wrong: many countries have seen dramatic reductions in poverty, too. Indonesia is one clear example; it’s shown alongside China on the chart. In 1984, 86% of Indonesians lived on less than $3 per day. By 2025, this had fallen to less than 4%. While it didn’t quite match China’s decline, it has still been impressive. The number of people living in extreme poverty has fallen from 140 million to about 10 million. Note that the international poverty line is extremely low, defined as people living on less than $3 per day. But Indonesia has also made progress when measuring higher poverty lines.

World Energy Transition Outlook 2026: 1.5°C Pathway - IRENA – International Renewable Energy Agency

The global energy transition has entered a decisive new phase. Renewable energy deployment continues to break records, technology costs have fallen significantly and electrification is advancing across transport, buildings and industry. However, the World Energy Transition Outlook 2026 finds that this progress remains too slow and uneven. The central challenge is increasingly one of accelerating implementation: scaling renewable energy, electrification, energy efficiency, grids, storage and flexibility together, while maintaining energy security, affordability and public acceptance.
