Satya Nadella says a company's relationship with AI should have trust issues - Business Insider

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says companies shouldn't trust AI models. Satya Nadella says that in the relationship between AI and a company, trust issues can be healthy. In a lengthy X post on Saturday, the Microsoft CEO said companies don't always understand an AI model's decisions or behavior, so they need to build walls to protect themselves from the tech. After all, it's very possible that AI is already exploring new connections. "We need to surround non-deterministic models with strong, deterministic system design, human controls, and reliable operating procedures, and establish industry standards where existing ones are insufficient," Nadella said. "Treating frontier closed and open weight models like insider risks is a way to build such a system. "Nadella said that AI models aren't inherently malicious, but anything with access to vital systems can become compromised or make mistakes. He added that AI models shouldn't be able to operate the controls that determine what they can access or what actions they can take. "Today this means separating the model from the harness that orchestrates its work, as well as the action space that defines what it can do.

Cats Are Catching Up, Pet Spending Is Dropping, and Veterinarians May Need to Rethink Their Business - Vet Candy

America still belongs to the dogs, but cats are making serious gains. New AVMA data reveal shifting pet populations, tighter household budgets and changing shopping habits that could reshape how veterinary practices attract clients, deliver care and sell medications. Dogs may still wear the crown in American households, but cats are quietly staging a takeover. New data from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) show that the U. S. cat population has grown substantially over the past decade, narrowing the gap with dogs and creating new opportunities for veterinary practices willing to rethink how they serve today's pet owners. According to the newly released 2026 AVMA Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook, the United States is now home to an estimated 88.9 million pet dogs and 77 million pet cats. While dogs still outnumber cats, the feline population has grown by approximately 32% since 2016, compared with about 16% growth among dogs. At the same time, average annual household spending on pets has fallen, raising important questions about affordability, preventive care and the future of veterinary practice revenue.

Here's what the new Netflix series about the FTX scandal got wrong, according to former staffers - Business Insider

"The Altruists," a series about the rise and fall of crypto exchange FTX, will debut on Netflix. Former FTX staffers are calling Netflix's new show about the company's collapse more fiction than fact. Constance Wang, the former chief operating officer of FTX and co-CEO of FTX Digital Markets, said watching the trailer for "The Altruists" made her "physically throw up. "Premiering on November 19, "The Altruists" is an eight-episode series dramatizing the rise and fall of the cryptocurrency exchange under former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried. Bankman-Fried is now serving a 25-year prison sentence for fraud after siphoning away billions from FTX customers. Caroline Ellison, who previously led FTX's affiliated crypto trading firm, Alameda Research, pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy and also served time in prison for her role in the scheme. The show is called "The Altruists" because the pair initially said they were members of the effective altruism movement, which advocates earning as much money as possible to help improve the world. "I was COO from before FTX even had a name, it was my baby, and I was the last one out of the Bahamas after Sam got extradited.
