EconomicsPublished: October 14, 2026 at 9:30a.m. EDTBNN Bloomberg is Canada’s definitive source for business news dedicated exclusively to helping Canadians invest and build their businesses. OTTAWA — Statistics Canada says the total value of building permits issued in Canada in August rose $1.1 billion month-over-month to $13.6 billion, boosted by strength in the residential sector. The agency says construction intentions for the homebuilding sector rose $1.1 billion to $8.5 billion in August. Government Working on Solutions to Heating, Ventilation Issue at Labrador Correctional Centre - VOCM

The Justice critic is seeking answers from government after learning that a legal dispute has left the Labrador Correctional Centre without the use of its HVAC system. The system has been down since July after the company contracted to do renovation work at the facility launched a lawsuit against government over asbestos management at the site. Justice critic Pam Parsons says she’s concerned about what that means for staff at the facility in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and the inmates. Parsons says it raises serious concerns about ventilation, mould, and heating as winter fast approaches. “Correctional officers and inmates…deserve a safe environment. The government cannot allow these concerns to drag on without clear answers and a plan to resolve them,” she says. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure says there is some heat available in the building, but more heat is required. The department says it is developing a plan to address heating and ventilation at the correctional centre, however, because of the ongoing legal dispute, it is unable to provide further comment at this time.

Why Canada’s caregivers say their retirement plans are being ‘decimated’ - Global News

When Tracy Slaney imagined her life after retirement, she says she pictured travelling the world with her husband. But like many caregivers in Canada, the cost of looking after her loved ones means she had to put her plans on hold. “Those retirement plans that I once had are gone. They are decimated,” she said. In 2014, she became a caregiver for her father after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Within days of his passing, her mother received a dementia diagnosis. Slaney then stepped into a caregiver role for her until she died in 2019. On Valentine’s Day 2020, she found her husband had been diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer. She spent most of her time, energy and finances caring for him, until he passed away in April this year. “I’ve been caregiving for 12 years, back-to-back,” she said. PepsiCo's Earnings Beat Masks a Bigger Problem With Its North American Business - The Globe and Mail

Investors are taking note of PepsiCo Inc. (NASDAQ: PEP) as the food and beverage leader trades below 16x earnings, one of its lowest valuations historically, and following a Q3 2026 earnings report with a number of highlights. Still, with the outlook for the near future looking less than optimistic, the company's real appeal may be to long-term investors who can settle in with a 4.67% dividend yield and wait for shares to capture some of the roughly 15% in upside potential Wall Street has assigned to the stock.
