EconomicsPublished: October 14, 2026 at 9:30a.m. EDTBNN Bloomberg is Canada’s definitive source for business news dedicated exclusively to helping Canadians invest and build their businesses. OTTAWA — Statistics Canada says the total value of building permits issued in Canada in August rose $1.1 billion month-over-month to $13.6 billion, boosted by strength in the residential sector. The agency says construction intentions for the homebuilding sector rose $1.1 billion to $8.5 billion in August. The increase came as permits for multi-unit buildings rose to $5.8 billion, while the total value of permits for single-family homes edged down to $2.6 billion. The value of non-residential building permits edged lower by $29.8 million to $5.1 billion in August. The move came as plans for commercial construction fell $380 million to $2.2 billion, offset in part by a $317.3-million gain in the industrial sector which totalled $1.1 billion. The institutional building component rose $32.9 million to $1.8 billion. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Oct. 14, 2026.

Class Action in Rough Halifax Plane Landing Certified in Supreme Court - VOCM

The Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador has certified a class action on behalf of passengers on board Air Canada Flight AC 2259 which landed hard at Halifax in December of 2025 after the plane’s landing gear collapsed. The flight had taken off from St. John’s International earlier that evening, and officials at YYT later confirmed that debris was found on one of its runways after the flight took off. They wouldn’t say at the time whether the discovery was related to the incident at Halifax. The class action names Air Canada, Provincial Aerospace Ltd, St. John’s International Airport Authority and the Halifax International Airport Authority, all of whom have consented to certification. Stephen Barnes of Bob Buckingham Law says they want to understand what went wrong that night and make sure that passengers have an opportunity to be fairly compensated for what they went through. The case will examine whether the defendants met their responsibilities for aircraft safety, runway safety and emergency response, and whether any failures caused injury or loss to passengers.
