Big donation for Little Theatre from Scotiabank - Jamaica Gleaner

The sounds of Jamaican theatre are set to get an upgrade as Scotiabank provides J$5 million to support the acquisition of state-of-the-art sound equipment for the Little Theatre. The contribution will help modernise the technical capabilities of one of Jamaica’s most enduring cultural spaces, while also creating opportunities for aspiring practitioners to develop skills in sound and technical production. Beyond the new equipment, a portion of Scotiabank’s support will fund a training programme for participants from communities surrounding the theatre, as well as students at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, helping to build a pipeline of talent equipped to work behind the scenes in Jamaica’s creative industries. “Scotiabank’s support allows us to do more than improve the quality of productions on our stage; it allows us to pass valuable technical skills on to another generation,” said chairperson of the Little Theatre Foundation, Marisa Benain.

John Oliver Says ‘Last Week Tonight’ Is “Never Gonna Change” Following Skydance Acquisition - Yahoo

John Oliver made a couple of jokey references to his new corporate parent on Sunday's Last Week Tonight. Oliver did not address Skydance's acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, owner of Last Week Tonight's network home, HBO, on last week's episode. But he did slip in a couple of quips about Skydance, which also acquired Paramount last year, on Sunday's edition. More from The Hollywood ReporterDuring his main segment, which was about generic medications, Oliver brought up the U. S. Food and Drug Administration's inspection of the overseas companies that produce these drugs. "You should know while surprise FDA inspections are common for U. S. factories, most FDA inspections done overseas are actually announced beforehand, allowing manufacturers to both prepare for them and potentially hide any issues," he explained. "In fact, one study found that the odds of a facility receiving the most severe inspection outcome are over 250 percent higher for unannounced inspections, which just makes sense, doesn't it? You clean up when you know people are coming over. "Oliver then made a joke about the studio his own show tapes in.

Grammy season is officially on. First-round voting for the 69th Annual Grammy Awards opens today (October 12) and runs through to Thursday, October 22. This round determines all the Grammy nominees for all the categories of the awards. Following that, the next big date on the Grammy calendar will be the official nominations announcement on November 16. Albums released from August 31, 2025, through to August 28, 2026 are eligible for consideration. Although the official number of albums submitted for the Best Reggae Album category is yet to be declared, music insiders believe that this year will be particularly interesting. As we do every year, we connected with our ‘Grammy Man in the Street’ Sean ‘Contractor’ Edwards, CEO of Contractor Music Marketing, for his thoughts on who will possibly make the top five nominees. “The 69th Grammy awards has 2300 new voting members which could significantly switch the status quo of nominees in each category,” Edwards told The Gleaner.

Skengdon’s dancehall legacy gets digital rewind - Jamaica Gleaner

In the 1980s, the giant speaker dancehall setting was the barometer by which noted producer-businessman Kenneth ‘Skengdon’ Black could judge whether a song was a bona fide hit or not. The dance was the ultimate litmus test where an emerging talent, a new voice, a booming riddim and a vibesy selector with the right touch could ignite a crowd. And Black was one of those in the music ecosystem who was prepared to bankroll that street-certified chemistry with hard cash. Forty years later, the executive producer’s investment in Jamaican talent is getting another feature. Albums featuring Super Cat, Nicodemus and Little John will complete the digital rollout of the Skengdon album catalogue on November 20, through VP Records. The releases will pave the way for Skengdon Anthology — The Sound System • The Studio • The Legacy, scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, bringing together recordings from an enterprise whose roots ran deep into sound-system culture. For Black, the business began with people he knew and talent he trusted. “My involvement started before the Skengdon recording sessions. I already had relationships within sound-system culture ...

Quentin Tarantino Teaming with Sacha Baron Cohen on West End Play ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’ - Yahoo

Brent LangMon, October 12, 2026 at 2:14 AM UTCQuentin Tarantino Teaming with Sacha Baron Cohen on West End Play ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’Shakespeare. Ibsen. O'Neill. Tarantino? Throughout its storied history, the West End has played host to the greatest playwrights. Now, Quentin Tarantino, the director of classics like "Pulp Fiction" and "Inglourious Basterds," is bringing his snappy dialogue, pop culture obsessions, and talent for mayhem to the London stage. He will write and direct "The Popinjay Cavalier," "a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen. " Or so the show notes go. Sacha Baron Cohen of "Borat" and "Bruno" fame has been tapped to star in the production, which will hold previews beginning February 23, before officially opening on March 18. "I'm keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out," Tarantino said in a statement. Baron Cohen was more enthusiastic and profane. "Quentin called, I said yes before he even got to say his first 'motherf — er.' When the best director in the world calls, you don't ask questions.
