Review: Drayton Entertainment's INTO THE WOODS is Pure Magic at St. Jacobs Country Playhouse, Toronto - BroadwayWorld

This month, tucked away in the heart of Waterloo’s St. Jacob’s Market District, is a bewitching theatrical experience that is bound to spring up in conversation as rapidly and dramatically as a magical beanstalk might spring up in a backyard. INTO THE WOODS is currently playing at Drayton Entertainment’s St. Jacob’s Country Playhouse in Waterloo. Boasting a cast of Canada’s top musical theatre talent, it is an embarrassment of riches that is not to be missed. With Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and Book by James Lapine, INTO THE WOODS is oft considered to be one of Sondheim’s most accessible musicals. It brings to life familiar fairy tales and then deconstructs them to explore complex yet relatable human experiences such as grief, loss, and betrayal. The stories of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel are cleverly woven together via two original characters – the Baker and the Baker’s wife - who desperately want a child and discover they have been unsuccessful due to a Witch’s curse.

Starstuff: A Festival of Solo Artists returns to Seattle’s Kerry Hall - Yakima Herald-Republic

Seattle, blessedly, bursts with new-works theater festivals these days. This month, a new festival with a unique spin on the format returns to Kerry Hall: Over three days, Starstuff: A Festival of Solo Artists will build a constellation of works that speak to one another, honoring the collaborative connections between artists, and between artist and audience. “I wanted to infuse this festival with everything that I wanted for artists, everything I wanted as an audience and everything that I wanted when I was fully a performer,” said Billie Wildrick, an uber-talented Seattle musical theater artist and the creative architect/artistic director of Starstuff, which debuted last year.  This year’s Starstuff runs Oct. 23-25, presented with Seattle Theatre Group. The festival’s format intentionally groups artists in constellations so their work can illuminate one another. Each block will feature a 15-minute interdisciplinary work, a songwriter performing an original song, a 60- to 80-minute solo show and another new song created in response to that show.

When 1 + 1 = 1: The Miserable Math Behind Many Media Mergers - The Entertainment Strategy Guy | Substack

(Welcome to the “Most Important Story of the Week”, my bi-weekly strategy column analyzing the most important (but often not buzziest) news story of the last two weeks. I’m the Entertainment Strategy Guy, a former streaming executive who now analyzes business strategy in the entertainment industry. Please subscribe.)The last few issues of this newsletter have circled two topics: September’s streaming viewership and all the Paramount/Skydance/Warner Bros./Discovery merger news. I’m happy to say on the Streaming Ratings Report front, we’ll be all caught up by early next week, then the SRR will come out on a tight weekly schedule. Then, after today, I’ll have slayed my PSWbD dragon. It’s such a big story, it demanded multiple issues. With the announcement of a name (just Skydance) and executive team, though, I think we can almost close the book on this story. In terms of topics, it becomes just another studio to cover. So today, I have one last set of takes on that merger. As I’ve sat with it, reading about who was staying and who was going, a big worry crystallized in my brain, and I gotta get that take out.

Carrie-Anne Moss on Her New Series Yaga and That John Wick 'Throwaway Line' - IGN

Carrie-Anne Moss first heard about the new AMC+ drama Yaga at just the right time. The actress, best known for starring in popular blockbuster fare like The Matrix, Star Wars: The Acolyte, and Jessica Jones, says she just happened to be independently researching the mythology behind the Yaga’s plot right before she was brought in. “I'd actually just been thinking about it, I'd say a week before,” Moss says. “I loved the fact that this had the lore of Baba Yaga. I'm someone who has always been interested in that story. It does work like that a lot for me, where I'll have a thought about something [and] suddenly a script will come across my path that has some kind of connection. I take those kinds of little nods from the ether as serious.”Yaga, which is debuting an exclusive clip that you can watch in the player above as part of IGN Fan Fest: Fall Edition, offers a modern twist on the classic Baba Yaga myth. Based on the play by Kat Sandler (who serves as showrunner here), the show follows Rapp (Noah Reid), “a private investigator who arrives in the small coastal town of Whittock to investigate the disappearance of a young heir to a powerful fishery, Henry Park (Hudson Williams).
