‘Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald’ Review: Judd Apatow’s Juicy and Haunting Portrait of a Comedy Star as Troubled as He Was Hilarious - Variety

Stand-up comedians have always had a reverence for what they like to call a “comic’s comic” — a fellow comedian who works with such distilled purity and edge, diving head-first into the gnarly metaphysics of comedy, that the comics end up worshipping him more than the public does. (He’s the stand-up-comedy equivalent of an ultimate cool indie-rock cult band.) Gilbert Gottfried was a comic’s comic. So are Larry David and Doug Stanhope and Maria Bamford. And Norm Macdonald was one too, except that as you watch Judd Apatow’s juicy and haunting documentary “Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald,” you realize that there was a special thing about him. He was a comic’s comic…who everyone else loved too. As the movie demonstrates, Macdonald’s credentials as a comic’s comic were unassailable. We see his very first network television appearance on May 9, 1990, on “Late Night with David Letterman,” where he did a bit about the devil commanding someone to kill his family and chop them into bits and stuff the pieces into a duffel bag. (Then the killer learns that the devil is a friend who was kidding.)

In this week’s The Traitors: New Blood , the Faithfuls lose their heads - A.V. Club

Welp, we were certainly overdue for an episode of The Traitors: New Blood that actually gave us something to talk about and, for better or worse, “A Murder Of Necessity” gave us just that in the form of a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it mission, a baffling roundtable, and #Fruitgate. But first, an answer to the cliffhung question, “Who ‘bit’ the poisoned apple?” The answer, it turns out, arrives before Alan can even make it official. Joe can’t sit on his guilt long enough to let the reveal play out properly: He confesses directly to Niyyah that he murdered her, unprompted and visibly anxious about it. “I had to sacrifice a Faithful,” he tells her. “I did not want it to be you… Niyyah, I love you, I’m sorry.” Strategically, the confession costs him nothing—Niyyah’s already dead, the info goes nowhere—which is also what makes it a little curious. To be clear, murdering Niyyah isn’t technically a sin; it’s the gig. Joe’s a Traitor, betrayal is the job, and he’s spent most of this season doing it almost gleefully. That’s what makes the graveside apology sit oddly. Niyyah, in her exit confessional, reads it as Joe needing to clear his conscience, and maybe that’s all it is.

The Traitors: New Blood Recap: The Fruit Toss of Doom - Vulture

It’s a shame that one of the season’s more annoying Faithfuls is the one who actually stumbles onto the Traitors’ trail. If you’re wondering why The Traitors: New Blood seems much more rushed than a typical American Traitors season, it’s because it is! We are losing 18 to 28 minutes per week due to the shift from Peacock to NBC, and I am grumpy about it. This is why I don’t feel like I understand the ties between the players and why the annoying ones take up so much space! Did it take my sister-in-law mentioning this for me to realize it? Yes. I’m the youngest child; I just go along with things.
