Local NewsMetro Detroit residents urged to report sightings of invasive insectHomeowners who report sightings of spongy moth egg masses while spending time outdoors this season could help protect local tree populations, according to Michigan State University (MSU) Extension. Formerly known as gypsy moths, the invasive insects have few natural predators in the U. S., making it easier for their populations to grow rapidly across the region. In their caterpillar stage, spongy moths are capable of stripping trees of their leaves — also known as defoliation — and when left unchecked can cause significant damage to trees, especially when other risk factors are present, like drought. According to MSU Extension, identifying and removing spongy moth egg masses before they hatch into caterpillars is one of the most effective steps homeowners can take to reduce local populations and help protect trees throughout Southeast Michigan. The egg masses, described by MSU Extension as “buff-colored and tear-drop shaped,” can be found on tree trunks and branches as well as on outdoor furniture, play equipment, fences, sheds, vehicles and homes, and measure approximately one to two inches in length.

Big start, uncomfortable finish for Celtics in season-opening loss

Although the Celtics made the game look easy for the first 2½ quarters, they immediately wilted when Detroit ramped up its defense and forced them to make difficult offensive plays. Tatum never looked comfortable. Shots that usually go down just didn’t. And without Jaylen Brown, it was essentially on him to carry the team when the game was in the balance. But the Pistons countered with a stirring 23-0 run behind the shooting of Duncan Robinson and former Celtic Javonte Green. Tatum finished 6 for 23 and 0 for 7 from the 3-point line. He missed all nine of his attempts outside of 17 feet and made just 2 of 7 shots at the rim. The Pistons stuck First-team All-Defense Ausar Thompson on Tatum and the results were dreadful. “I mean [the shot] felt good, but definitely not one of my best nights,” Tatum said. “I have to play better. Part of my role is scoring so I felt really good about a lot of the looks.
