Thousands of California voters got duplicate vote-by-mail ballots. Here's what happened

The Tulare County elections office in the Central Valley was suddenly getting peppered with questions from baffled voters. On the afternoon of Oct. 13, residents began calling and showing up in person at the registrar of voters’ office in Visalia, worried they would be accused of committing fraud by trying to vote twice. That’s because, much to the surprise and chagrin of county elections staff, thousands of voters had accidentally been mailed duplicate ballots for the Nov. 3 midterm election. In the agricultural city of Tulare, a place surrounded by walnut and almond orchards as far as the eye can see, 7,791 voters received extra ballots because of an error by the private printing vendor, said Michelle Baldwin, the county registrar of voters, who noted that safeguards were in place to keep the extra ballots from being counted. The county’s longtime ballot printer, Porterville-based ProVote Solutions, “has accepted full responsibility for the mistake,” she said. ProVote Solutions did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “It is unfortunate that it happened,” Baldwin said.

What are spongy moths? Michigan residents asked to report sightings to protect local tree populations - ClickOnDetroit | WDIV Local 4

Local NewsMetro Detroit residents urged to report sightings of invasive insectHomeowners who report sightings of spongy moth egg masses while spending time outdoors this season could help protect local tree populations, according to Michigan State University (MSU) Extension. Formerly known as gypsy moths, the invasive insects have few natural predators in the U. S., making it easier for their populations to grow rapidly across the region. In their caterpillar stage, spongy moths are capable of stripping trees of their leaves — also known as defoliation — and when left unchecked can cause significant damage to trees, especially when other risk factors are present, like drought. According to MSU Extension, identifying and removing spongy moth egg masses before they hatch into caterpillars is one of the most effective steps homeowners can take to reduce local populations and help protect trees throughout Southeast Michigan. The egg masses, described by MSU Extension as “buff-colored and tear-drop shaped,” can be found on tree trunks and branches as well as on outdoor furniture, play equipment, fences, sheds, vehicles and homes, and measure approximately one to two inches in length.
