Few cities in California last week felt the full brunt of the climate crisis more than the small coastal town of San Clemente. The beach city at the southern end of Orange County for months has been dealing with widespread coastal erosion from El Niño-related Pacific storms that has threatened a crucial rail line and reshaped swaths of its beaches. Then, as the waves were still pounding, a fire broke out in the city’s bushy foothills Friday, quickly burning toward hillside neighborhoods and destroying homes in nearby San Juan Capistrano. San Clemente’s challenges demonstrate what more of California will probably face as the twin dangers of fire and coastal erosion converge this winter. Southern California is just entering its traditional fire season, and forecasters are predicting more coastal flooding and erosion from what is expected to be a severe El Niño winter. “We’re in a crisis,” said Cameron Cosgrove, a 14-year San Clemente resident and a planning commissioner. “Our beaches are eroding and our wildfire risk is very high, especially during Santa Ana wind conditions.

Group assisting long-planned review of firearms — including SKS — has yet to meet

An advisory group that’s supporting a federal review of firearms classification — including a look at the SKS rifle — is expected to hold its first meeting this fall, almost a year after Ottawa announced the review. Public Safety Canada says members of the Firearms Classification Technical Advisory Group, appointed to provide expert advice to the department and the RCMP, “will be meeting later this fall.”The Liberal government has faced fresh questions about the SKS after a document filed in a U. S. court said the killer in the Tumbler Ridge, B. C., mass shooting talked about having an SKS gun. Eighteen-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar killed eight people in the Feb. 10 Tumbler Ridge attack before taking her own life. The RCMP has declined to release details about firearms used in the shootings, saying its investigation is ongoing. Story continues below advertisement

Macron blasts ‘stupid’ claims by Trump and others blaming Muslims migrants for French riots

PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday blamed “foreign leaders,” including those “on the other side of the Atlantic,” for trying to exploit France’s tense social climate for their own political agenda. Protests over soaring living costs have led to widespread rioting and looting. U. S. President Donald Trump has used the violence to rally his political supporters, making unsubstantiated claims that Muslim migrants are responsible for the unrest. Trump has urged Macron to “close your borders and take control before it is too late!”Macron responded by saying there “has been foreign manipulation of information in the aftermath” of the looting in Paris and other French cities last weekend. “And that has led to comments that are as unacceptable as they are stupid, from many people, including foreign leaders,” he said. Asked by a reporter if he was referring to Trump, Macron replied: “Among others.”Macron added: “We’ve seen AI-generated images depicting scenes that never actually happened in France.
