PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday blamed “foreign leaders,” including those “on the other side of the Atlantic,” for trying to exploit France’s tense social climate for their own political agenda. Protests over soaring living costs have led to widespread rioting and looting. U. S. President Donald Trump has used the violence to rally his political supporters, making unsubstantiated claims that Muslim migrants are responsible for the unrest. Trump has urged Macron to “close your borders and take control before it is too late!”Macron responded by saying there “has been foreign manipulation of information in the aftermath” of the looting in Paris and other French cities last weekend. “And that has led to comments that are as unacceptable as they are stupid, from many people, including foreign leaders,” he said. Asked by a reporter if he was referring to Trump, Macron replied: “Among others.”Macron added: “We’ve seen AI-generated images depicting scenes that never actually happened in France.

Claims about fraudulent results in Alberta referendum false, expert says
Posts questioning the results in Alberta’s referendum spread on the social media platform X this week as the numbers were released. One claimed that hundreds of thousands of mail-in ballots were dumped to answer just one of the questions put to voters — the 10th question asking about independence. Another concluded more people had voted than the number of registered voters. Elections Alberta and one expert say the people making these claims either misunderstood or deliberately misrepresented the vote-counting process. An Oct. 20 post on X alleged that hundreds of thousands of special ballots were dumped to tilt the outcome of the independence referendum question in favour of Alberta remaining in Canada.

Carney says Trump’s tariffs hurt Americans as US alleges Canadian interference
TORONTO (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday that U. S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs have driven up costs for American families and upended a decades-old trade relationship as he unveiled a multibillion-dollar plan to shield Canada’s manufacturing heartland from the trade war. Carney also said he spoke with Trump for “quite some time” about issues including trade, as the U. S. Embassy in Canada accused Canadian politicians of seeking to influence American politics ahead of next month’s midterm elections. Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford rejected suggestions of improper interference. Trump has openly said he wants automakers to move production from Canada to the United States, threatening an industry deeply integrated across the border for decades. “U. S. tariffs have upended a trade bargain that’s existed for decades,” Carney said. “They’ve raised costs for American families while putting Ontario workers and businesses at a disadvantage and under a cloud of uncertainty.”Get Power PlayA twice-weekly dive into the power players and moves driving business in Massachusetts, authored by long-time business columnists Shirley Leung and Jon Chesto.
