2027 Mercedes-AMG GLS63 Is More Rapid, More Ridiculous, And More Rad Than Ever
The Mercedes-Benz GLS is the brand's largest SUV, charged with the dubious honor of being the S-Class of SUVs, and to keep up with the W223 S-Class's recent refresh that brought new styling, powertrains and tech, it's now the GLS's turn for its second facelift. You've been seeing a series of Mercedes SUV reviews hit the site over the past few weeks, starting with the also reworked 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE, then the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE53, and now it's finally time for the big daddy Mercedes-AMG GLS63. I didn't get the chance to drive the non-AMG GLS on this trip, though its updates mirror those given to the smaller GLE. The GLS63 is really the one you want to hear about anyway, though. This, the pinnacle of the GLS lineup, is utterly ridiculous and totally pointless, yet simultaneously awesome.

The Mercedes-AMG GLS63 is a Luxury Three-Row Crossed with a Sports Car
At first glance, the new Mercedes-Benz GLS Class looks like a typical midcycle update: new lights, grille, wheel designs; a little nip and tuck to keep things fresh. However, some 3000 components are new or revised, more than 40 percent of the pieces that go into this 17-foot long, 6100-pound SUV. Consider the V-8 in the AMG GLS 63. It’s still a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter making 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, the same peak figures as last year. Nothing new there, right? Well, not much beyond the block, the heads, the turbos, the camshafts, and the hybrid system’s electric motor. Not only is the crankshaft new, it’s an entirely new concept—new, at least, to the GLS. Like decades’ worth of high-winding Ferrari V-8s and the LT6 in the range-topping C8 Corvettes, Mercedes’s M177 Evo uses a flat-plane crank. Mercedes BenzWhen they massaged the M177 V-8 for the last-generation AMG GT Black Series, Mercedes engineers were surprised to find it developed more torque more quickly with a flat-plane crankshaft than the cross-plane piece it was originally designed with.
