Red-sensitive pigments in mantis shrimp eyes act as reversible light switches - Phys.org
With about 30 visual pigments, compared to just three in humans, mantis shrimp possess a visual system that remains a mystery. Researchers from ULiège and Humboldt University in Berlin have, for the first time, analyzed these pigments one by one and discovered that some detect red light that very few animals can perceive. This finding, published in Science Advances, has potential applications in optogenetics. Vision is one of the most sophisticated sensory systems; it relies on proteins (opsins) that capture light and convert the signal into an electrical message that the brain can interpret. When combined with retinal, a small, universal molecule derived from vitamin A, opsins form the visual pigments (rhodopsins) that absorb light in the photoreceptors of the retina. In humans, three cone pigments are sufficient for color perception.

Cells Block Repair System to Fuse Together - Mirage News
The fusion of two cells is a decisive event in the sexual reproduction of many organisms. In fungi, cells must not only bring their membranes together and merge them, but also locally open their protective cell wall. A study conducted at the University of Geneva (UNIGE) shows how a mechanism that prevents cells from repairing their wall at the fusion site makes this process irreversible. Published in the journal Current Biology, these findings provide new insights into how cells coordinate fusion and repair mechanisms and could ultimately open new avenues for targeting the cell wall of pathogenic fungi. Unlike animal cells, fungal cells are surrounded by a rigid cell wall. This structure protects them and allows them to withstand the internal pressure exerted by their cellular contents. When two cells fuse, notably during sexual reproduction, this wall must be locally degraded to allow the membranes of the two cells to merge. Once this step has been completed, fusion normally proceeds until a single cell is formed.
Research Roadblocks: Genuine Scientific Innovation Often Arises From Serendipitous Discoveries - EIN Presswire
Broaden observation dimensions to unlock untapped research insights with flexible multiple factors protein detection solutions HUSTON, TX, UNITED STATES, October 19, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Many researchers across universities, affiliated hospitals and research institutes are grappling with a shared challenge: difficulty sourcing original research topics, generating novel ideas and publishing high-quality papers. Even well-resourced laboratories with sufficient funding, complete experimental platforms and solid team capacity frequently hit a bottleneck in exploratory work. This article unpacks the root causes behind this widespread research dilemma and introduces an enabling tool to help researchers capture unexpected, high-value experimental signals during early-stage exploration. Many researchers in universities, affiliated hospitals and research institutes have recently encountered a common predicament: research topic shortage. This “topic shortage” does not stem from insufficient research funding, lack of experimental platforms or understaffed research groups.
