After the Snowmelt review – a fatal disaster in a snowstorm leads to devastating act of remembrance

A work of deep personal reckoning, Yi-Shan Lo’s debut documentary feature opens with closeups of the film-maker’s own footsteps as she trudges through a snowbound landscape. Her jagged movement mirrors the rugged trajectory of the film itself, which grapples with a harrowing tragedy. In 2017, Lo was about to join her best friends Chun and Yueh on their hiking trip across Nepal when she came down with a sudden illness; she decided to stay behind while the other two carried on. Disaster struck: the pair went missing during a heavy snowstorm and were not found for more than 40 days. Yueh survived, but Chun died from lack of food coupled with hypothermia. Struggling to make sense of these events, Lo painstakingly retraces the days leading up to and during her friends’ disappearance. She pores over old text messages, Chun’s diaries and footage captured by the Nepali rescue team. These materials shed some light on the ordeal, as well as the pair’s backgrounds. Diving into her personal archive, Lo recalls her burgeoning friendship with Chun at their Catholic girls’ school, where the latter defiantly resisted the institution’s rigid dress codes.

Located in a neighborhood historically associated with theaters, cabarets, and the artistic life of Montparnasse, the project transforms hospitality into an immersive experience shaped by fantasy, mythology, and the performing arts. The building itself carries an unusual history, having originally housed Les Mille Colonnes, a renowned theater dating back to the early 19th century. Its historic façade now introduces a series of interiors where decorative elements, unexpected colors, and references to Parisian cultural heritage unfold throughout the hotel. The project was initiated in 2024 by hotelier Jacques Blanc, who envisioned a property that would depart from conventional hospitality design.

‘Taylor Swift tells us to take the lead!’ Could highly organised pop fans clinch victory for Brazil’s Lula?

Earlier this month, Brazil’s president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva led a rally in São Paulo, as he aims to be re-elected to a fourth presidential term, and faces serious opposition from right-winger Flávio Bolsonaro. Taking the mic before a crowd on Avenida Paulista that organisers put at more than a million, the former union leader began: “I’m not sure whether to open this speech with ‘comrades’ or ‘fandoms from all over Brazil’.” The rally was organised by Lula’s Workers’ party (PT) and a string of other leftwing groups – but the spark came from pop music fandoms. More than 600 Brazilian fanbase groups for Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, Katseye, Demi Lovato, Harry Styles, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, as well as Brazilian stars such as Anitta, Marina Sena and Ludmilla among others, all came together to back Lula, waging an intense online campaign as soon as Lula’s rival, son of imprisoned former president Jair Bolsonaro, came out on top in the first round on 4 October. Neither candidate earned more than 50% of the vote, so a runoff is now scheduled for 25 October to decide between the two.
