Police Found A Semitruck Held Together With Ratchet Straps—And A Toddler Without A Seat Belt

Ratchet straps are handy things to have around a truck — except when they're being used to hold the cab together. Likewise, racing slicks are helpful on the track, but bald tires are super dangerous on road-going semitrucks. Finally, it's great when truck drivers want to bring their families to work, although an improperly restrained infant is not the way to do so. According to the BC Highway Patrol, an officer stopped a tractor-trailer with all of the above violations. And then some.
The truck in question was pulled over near Malakwa on Highway 1 at 7:45 a.m. on September 26. It was dark, raining heavily, and the rig had no functioning taillights. Already, this sounds severely unsafe, but things only got worse during the inspection that followed. Police say the truck had defective brakes and lights, bald tires, a cracked windshield, and at least one missing windshield wiper. Diesel was leaking and there were hydraulic and air lines were detached, but perhaps the biggest danger to the public was the fact that the truck just so happened to be carrying unsecured steel bars.

Tom started his career as a daily newspaper reporter in metro Detroit and after a decade changed course to cover cars, spending the next 25 years at Wards Automotive doing test drives, technology and supplier coverage, editing WardsAuto World magazine and managing the Wards 10 Best competitions for powertrains, then interiors, then the user experience. He became executive editor at Autoweek in 2022 and joined Valnet in 2025. At CarBuzz, he's returned to his roots: a reporter seeking out news and trends and telling stories, but with more experience. Tom's wife has been putting up with him since 1990, and they have two adult children. He runs half-marathons and plays guitar in a rock band with other Detroit auto writers, called the Exhaust Tones. General Motors is on track with the launch of its redesigned full-size 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, with production having started last week in Silao, Mexico. US production is coming, but the earliest deliveries will originate from south of the border.

The Plug-In Hybrid Lexus TX550h+ Has Been Discontinued for 2027
Lexus is discontinuing the plug-in hybrid TX550h+ following the 2026 model year. The gas-powered TX350 and hybrid TX500h, pictured above, continue for 2027, with prices starting at $58,890 and $72,410, respectively. For 2027, Lexus is expanding the availability of the Matador Red Mica paint and simplifying the TX500h’s badging. Lexus launched the TX in 2024 as a mid-size three-row SUV to slot in between the RX and LX, and offered the TX with a gas-only powertrain along with two hybrids, one with a traditional setup and one with a more complex plug-in hybrid system. For 2027, Lexus is giving the TX a handful of small tweaks, but the biggest update is actually the disappearance of the TX550h+ plug-in hybrid. LexusThe TX’s PHEV model is officially being discontinued, Lexus has confirmed, with the 2026 model year being its last. Lexus didn’t provide a reason, but the evidence is pretty clear if you take a peek at the automaker’s sales charts. While Lexus sold 57,346 units of the TX in 2025, just 953 of those were the PHEV model, compared to 10,740 examples of the hybrid TX500h.
