Potential school support worker strike in N.S. puts families in limbo

Some families in Nova Scotia are scrambling ahead of a possible school support worker strike next week, and an advocacy group says some students are being unfairly affected. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) says more than 5,000 workers may go on strike beginning Monday, Oct. 26. Those workers include education program assistants (EPAs), lead early childhood educators, bus drivers, janitors and cafeteria workers. For Kirkley Westhaver, a strike would mean having to decide whether she tags along with her eight-year-old daughter to school or has her daughter stay home. “I’m really not sure at this juncture what I want to do because I want to support the EPAs, I want the support the people who make her life possible but I also don’t want her to miss out and that’s what I think a lot of parents are facing right now,” she said. Fort Bend County approves Tesla deal that could give the company 35 years of tax breaks

TeslaWatch Eyewitness News and ABC13 originals around the clockThursday, October 22, 2026 9:37PMRICHMOND, Texas (KTRK) -- For the first time, Fort Bend County taxpayers saw how much the county is willing to give up to attract a Tesla solar site. Thursday's commissioners court agenda was an agreement with Tesla. The agreement passed by a 4-0 vote, with interim County Judge Daniel Wong abstaining because of his business relationship with the company. The proposed site is a grassy field just south of Rosenberg at the intersection of FM 762 and FM 1994. Carlos Guzman, the county's economic director, said the county had to approve the deal to stay in the running for the project. While commissioners signed off, Guzman said Tesla hasn't made a decision. "It's a very competitive project. That's why the county needed to step up to stay in the running," Guzman said. "If we had not done this, the county would've been eliminated from consideration. "Under the agreement, Tesla could receive tax breaks for more than 35 years. Officials could not tell ABC13 how much money Tesla would keep, but said it amounts to millions of dollars every year. Guzman said Tesla would still pay property taxes.
