Some families in Nova Scotia are scrambling ahead of a possible school support worker strike next week, and an advocacy group says some students are being unfairly affected.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) says more than 5,000 workers may go on strike beginning Monday, Oct. 26. Those workers include education program assistants (EPAs), lead early childhood educators, bus drivers, janitors and cafeteria workers. For Kirkley Westhaver, a strike would mean having to decide whether she tags along with her eight-year-old daughter to school or has her daughter stay home. “I’m really not sure at this juncture what I want to do because I want to support the EPAs, I want the support the people who make her life possible but I also don’t want her to miss out and that’s what I think a lot of parents are facing right now,” she said. LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania -- Autumn has arrived at Appleford Estate, where perfectly manicured gardens intertwine with the history of Pennsylvania's Main Line. The property dates back to a land grant during the era of William Penn. Over the centuries, it changed hands with mainly farmers before landing in the hands of its final private owners: Anabel and Lewis Parsons. The Parsons enjoyed hosting lavish parties with friends and family. But particularly, Anabel enjoyed gardening. Soon enough, Anabel could see a garden by looking out of every window in her bedroom. Following her death in the 1970s, Anabel left the property to Lower Merion Township. Then, neighbors formed the Appleford Committee to ensure it could continue to be enjoyed by the public. Top StoriesToday, Appleford Estate hosts private functions such as weddings and conferences. They are also open to the public to enjoy walking through the garden and taking tours of the historic fieldstone house.
