PBO trims Canadian economic forecasts amid U.S. tariffs, countermeasures

Open this photo in gallery:Parliamentary Budget Officer Annette Ryan, shown in Ottawa in June, pointed out in her report that the federal debt is growing twice as fast as the growth in deficits. Justin Tang/The Canadian PressParliamentary Budget Officer Annette Ryan is warning about the accelerating growth of the federal debt and says Ottawa’s accounting “obscures” the true scale of borrowing. The PBO on Tuesday released its Economic and Fiscal Outlook, which provides an independent assessment of the state of federal finances ahead of the 2026 budget, which is expected to be released soon. Ms. Ryan’s report says that while higher oil prices and other factors have provided a short-term boost to Ottawa’s bottom line, new spending announcements have already used all of that fiscal room and more. Federal deficits are projected to be $3-billion higher per year over the next four years in comparison with the PBO’s most recent forecast in June. But Ms. Ryan points out that the federal debt is growing twice as fast as the growth in deficits because of the government’s increased use of Crown corporations to deliver on its agenda, as well as increased defence commitments.

Unifor welcomes Canadian tariff countermeasures, calls for additional action - Unifor National

TORONTO—Unifor welcomes the Canadian tariff countermeasures announced today but is reiterating the union’s call for stronger industrial policies and income security measures, as the trade war with the United States escalates. “Unifor has long called for Canada to fight back against Trump tariffs designed to target Canada’s industrial base and force concessions from Canada,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “The Canadian counter-tariffs are a good first response, but we need to take action at home to keep workers on the job by fast-tracking procurement dollars, implementing national industrial strategies, and calling on corporate Canada to step up and Buy Canadian.”In addition to dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of U. S. goods, the federal government also announced several changes to Employment Insurance (EI). The measures include extending the waiver of the one-week EI waiting period and allowing workers to receive EI without first using up separation payments, both through October 2027. They also extend the Work-Sharing Program to March 2027 and provide an additional 20 weeks of EI for long-serving workers only, through June 2027.
