I-C eye drops ease mild-to-moderate dry in early trial - Glance by Eyes On Eyecare

Findings from a recent study published in Clinical Ophthalmology show that iota-carrageenan (I-C) eye drops eased dry eye disease (DED) symptoms and protected the ocular surface in adults with mild-to-moderate disease. Give me some background first. Some context: DED is one of the most common reasons patients see eyecare practitioners (as evidenced in the Tear Film Ocular Society’s DEWS II), and its global prevalence runs anywhere from 5% to 50% depending on region and age group (see this epidemiology report for more on this). The lubricant market has been dominated for decades by hyaluronic acid (HA) products. Innovation since then has mostly meant new combinations of existing compounds. But real gaps remain, with tolerability issues, little ability to help damaged tissue heal, and a therapeutic effect that can take weeks or months to kick in. So what’s the argument favoring I-C drops? The pitch: I-C is a natural polysaccharide extracted from red seaweed. It forms a gel on contact with the ocular surface, holds water there, and thins under the shear of a blink so it does not fight the eyelid.

Integrated fermentation optimization and downstream purification strategies for enhanced monascin and ankaflavin production by Monascus purpureus TST - Nature

We’re sharing this article early to provide faster access to peer-reviewed, accepted research. It is citable and carries a permanent DOI. This version is subject to further edits and will be replaced automatically by the final Version of Record. All legal disclaimers apply. AbstractMonascin (MS) and ankaflavin (AK) are bioactive yellow pigments produced by Monascus species, known for their health benefits and safety profile compared to monacolin K. This study developed an integrated strategy combining Response Surface Methodology (RSM) for submerged fermentation optimization and a downstream purification process to maximize MS and AK production by Monascus purpureus TST. Although the results of this study demonstrate that RSM did not successfully predict the optimal production conditions, the RSM optimization revealed significant interactions between sucrose, ammonium sulfate, and magnesium sulfate heptahydrate. Verification experiments confirmed that the optimal culture conditions for M. purpureus TST were 200 g/L sucrose, 17.5 g/L (NH4)2SO4, and 0.1 g/L MgSO4·7H2O.
