Gilgamesh by Simon Armitage review – an ancient epic is brilliantly translated for our times
The poet laureate is paid a salary of £5,750 per annum plus a barrel of sherry. No specific duties are attached to the role, but there is an expectation that poets will write verse for public occasions and royal events, a duty that Simon Armitage has fulfilled by writing a poem on the death of Elizabeth II, Floral Tribute, and another to mark the coronation of Charles and Camilla in 2023. Though it’s an awkward time for the royals, no laureate is going to write about them behaving badly (it wasn’t John Dryden, the first laureate, who wrote about Charles II’s bedroom habits, but John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester). And yet with Gilgamesh, Armitage does deliver a poem about royalty’s misdeeds, at least in part. The epic originated in ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) at least 4,000 years ago, and it begins with the eponymous demigod, king of Uruk, lording it over his subjects. Among other bad habits, he exercises the “right of the first night”, which allows him to bed newlywed brides before their husbands. To check his powers, the gods create his counterpart, the wild man Enkidu, who confronts Gilgamesh outside the house of one of these brides.

Neither she nor the driver of the vehicle have been charged with a crime. A lawyer for the Wiley family denounced the attorney general's findings on Monday and called for the release of footage from the incident. Police were called to a Walmart store on 14 June after a report of baby supplies being allegedly stolen. According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, officers arrived to find two women and a child walking towards a car. Officers tried to stop the vehicle but it was allegedly driven at one of them, nearly striking an officer.

Exiled critic of Rwandan president found beheaded in Uganda - Al Jazeera
Ugandan police say a male body has been found in a village near Kampala, and his head has yet to be located. An exiled vocal critic of the Rwandan government has been found decapitated near Kampala, south-central Uganda, according to a police spokesperson, in a case which remains under investigation. Ugandan police said on Monday they were investigating the “murder of a male adult (around 50), whose head was cut off, and up to now, the head has not yet been recovered”, spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke told reporters, adding that the body had been identified by relatives as Robert Kabera. The body was found in Luwala, a village near Kampala, and the killing likely took place late on October 16 or early on October 17, police added. Robert Kabera, a former sergeant who fled Rwanda several years ago, was living in Uganda. The former soldier was not critical of the government during his time with the military, but grew increasingly opposed to Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Kabera had a YouTube channel, “Major Robert TV”, with 144,000 subscribers.
