Group assisting long-planned review of firearms — including SKS — has yet to meet
An advisory group that’s supporting a federal review of firearms classification — including a look at the SKS rifle — is expected to hold its first meeting this fall, almost a year after Ottawa announced the review. Public Safety Canada says members of the Firearms Classification Technical Advisory Group, appointed to provide expert advice to the department and the RCMP, “will be meeting later this fall.”The Liberal government has faced fresh questions about the SKS after a document filed in a U. S. court said the killer in the Tumbler Ridge, B. C., mass shooting talked about having an SKS gun. Eighteen-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar killed eight people in the Feb. 10 Tumbler Ridge attack before taking her own life. The RCMP has declined to release details about firearms used in the shootings, saying its investigation is ongoing. Story continues below advertisement

Macron blasts ‘stupid’ claims by Trump and others blaming Muslims migrants for French riots
PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday blamed “foreign leaders,” including those “on the other side of the Atlantic,” for trying to exploit France’s tense social climate for their own political agenda. Protests over soaring living costs have led to widespread rioting and looting. U. S. President Donald Trump has used the violence to rally his political supporters, making unsubstantiated claims that Muslim migrants are responsible for the unrest. Trump has urged Macron to “close your borders and take control before it is too late!”Macron responded by saying there “has been foreign manipulation of information in the aftermath” of the looting in Paris and other French cities last weekend. “And that has led to comments that are as unacceptable as they are stupid, from many people, including foreign leaders,” he said. Asked by a reporter if he was referring to Trump, Macron replied: “Among others.”Macron added: “We’ve seen AI-generated images depicting scenes that never actually happened in France.

How Foulkes, Block, and Guckian fared in the last R.I. governor’s debate
PROVIDENCE — The three main candidates for Rhode Island governor squared off in their final televised debate Tuesday on WPRI Channel 12. The debate presented a different test for each candidate. Democrat Helena Foulkes needed to protect her lead in the polls. Independent Ken Block needed to make a convincing case that he could still win. Republican Aaron Guckian needed to prove that his campaign was worth taking seriously. Here’s how they did – and what their performances could tell us about the state of the race. That’s all, Foulkes? Foulkes had an opportunity to strengthen her grip on the race with a knockout performance Tuesday, but she never quite found the rhythm that helped her dominate the debate stage in the 2022 Democratic primary. Then again, the stakes are different now that she’s on the doorstep of becoming governor rather than trying to establish herself as an upstart challenger.
