Firm behind planned Anthropic data centre in Nova Scotia denies owing fees to N.L.
Published: October 22, 2026 at 5:00a.m. EDTST. JOHN’S — A company planning a massive data centre in Nova Scotia for artificial intelligence giant Anthropic is in the midst of a dispute about land fees for a failed wind-powered hydrogen project in southern Newfoundland. The Newfoundland and Labrador government confirmed Tuesday that it was still trying to collect outstanding fees from EverWind Fuels for Crown lands set aside for the company’s proposed wind-hydrogen operation on Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula. But an EverWind official said the company doesn’t owe the Newfoundland and Labrador government anything. “EverWind never signed a Crown land reservation agreement, accepted the province’s proposed reservation fees, or made any contractual commitment to pay the amounts now being claimed,” said a statement emailed Tuesday by Matthew Tinari, EverWind’s chief financial and strategy officer. The company never agreed to the amount of land the province set aside for its project, nor to the terms of the land payments, Tinari said. “EverWind categorically disputes the basis for these charges and rejects the assertion that it owes any debt to the Crown,” he said.

CPP and OAS: Should you take the money or wait?: Stan Wong
Published: October 22, 2026 at 5:00a.m. EDTWho would turn down a 42 per cent pay raise? That is effectively the choice facing Canadians deciding when to collect their Canada Pension Plan (CPP). Waiting until 70 rather than starting at 65 increases monthly payments by 42 per cent. The catch? Five years without collecting a penny. Clients frequently ask me whether they should begin collecting CPP as early as age 60, wait until 65 or defer until 70, and when they should start Old Age Security (OAS). Many instinctively favour taking the money early. But the better question is how these decisions fit into their overall financial plan. Do you actually need the income? Consider two retirees, both aged 65. One has a workplace pension, substantial investments, and no immediate need for additional income. Deferring CPP could strengthen financial security later. The other relies on investment withdrawals to pay everyday expenses. Collecting earlier might reduce the need to sell investments during a market downturn. The same pension rules can produce very different answers.

The 696-car, 7.6-kilometre-long train, operated by the national rail operator Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), chugged from Saldanha to the Northern Cape on an 861-kilometre-long track, the company said on Tuesday. How to set CTV News as your preferred source on Google“The exercise was undertaken as a dynamic train evaluation programme with the dual objective of pursuing a world record and advancing technical knowledge in train design, train handling and operational performance,” according to the firm’s news release. Using electric and diesel-electric locomotives interspersed along the length of the train, the company said it was able to “operate as a synchronized unit, enabling the controlled distribution of traction and braking forces across the train’s entire length.”Australian mining company BHP previously held the world record with a train nearly seven kilometres long, according to Guinness World Records. That train consisted of 682 ore cars pushed by eight diesel-electric locomotives, set in June 2001.
