A landmark 1881 strike gets the spotlight in ‘The Wash’

“It’s important people know that Black women have always been at the forefront of movements,” Jones says. “Kelundra Smith tells a powerful story through the eyes of distinctly different women who were a part of it. It has a sense of community, sisterhood, and history.”“The Wash” unfolds in the kitchen work area of a washing service co-op in Atlanta run by Anna and Jeanie, two women determined to help each other and other women earn enough money to survive and provide for their families. The story flows around the long days, hard work, and camaraderie fostered by Anna and Jeanie, despite the different ages, experience, and motivations among these women who work in the co-op, all of whom see the work as a stepping stone to something bigger. “Anna and Jeanie have a mission,” Jones says. “They are shepherding young women through a job that allows them to feel safe and empowered, and then move on.”Lindsey McWhorter, center, is surrounded by, clockwise from left, MaConnia Chesser, Jada Saintlouis, Kiera Prusmack, MarHadoo Effeh, and Eliza Fichter during rehearsal for "The Wash.

Potential school support worker strike in N.S. puts families in limbo

Some families in Nova Scotia are scrambling ahead of a possible school support worker strike next week, and an advocacy group says some students are being unfairly affected. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) says more than 5,000 workers may go on strike beginning Monday, Oct. 26. Those workers include education program assistants (EPAs), lead early childhood educators, bus drivers, janitors and cafeteria workers. For Kirkley Westhaver, a strike would mean having to decide whether she tags along with her eight-year-old daughter to school or has her daughter stay home. “I’m really not sure at this juncture what I want to do because I want to support the EPAs, I want the support the people who make her life possible but I also don’t want her to miss out and that’s what I think a lot of parents are facing right now,” she said.
