Ferrari was at the forefront of trying to banish the manual transmission, which is why it is both ironic and fitting that the Italian supercar maker is now trying to atone by bringing it back. Well, almost. Semantics matter here, because while the new 12Cilindri Manuale does indeed have a magnificent gated shifter in the center of its cabin, and three pedals crammed tightly into its driver’s-side footwell, it does not possess a true manual transmission. Instead it has the same automated dual-clutch as the regular 12Cilindri, the hardware identical across both variants, with this carefully reworked to behave and feel like a shift lever commanding meshed gears through selector forks. Does it fully convince? That’s what Ferrari took Road & Track to Italy to find out. Ferrari really did try hard to discourage buyers from choosing a manual transmission in the early years of this century.

Mercedes Crashes Two CLAs To Demonstrate EV Safety

Car safety has come a long way in recent decades, and eager to demonstrate just how safe the new-generation CLA is, Mercedes-Benz conducted a crash test unlike any other. It used a petrol-powered CLA Shooting Brake to slam into the side of an all-electric CLA sedan, replicating exactly the type of T-bone crash that often happens at intersections. Automakers have tested side-impact performance for years, using a heavy crash cart to simulate a second vehicle. Mercedes-Benz's latest test goes one step further and, apparently, is the first of its kind to involve two moving vehicles, letting it see exactly how the two models perform. The narration is a little overdramatic, as if Mercedes just landed a man on the moon, but Mercedes declares all the test dummies were kept safe.
