Oct 22, 2026, 7:20 a.m. EDT3 min readBitcoin dominance (TradingView)SummaryThis is an excerpt from CoinDesk newsletter 'Daybook.' Sign up here, if you haven't already. Bitcoin’s BTC$84,459.46 share of the crypto market has climbed to the highest level since May, even as prices across the wider market weaken. The cryptocurrency’s dominance rate, its contribution to the total market value of digital assets, reached 60% on Wednesday and remains near that level. The move signals a renewed preference for BTC, with investors favoring the largest cryptocurrency over alternative coins. The rise in dominance comes amid muted price action. Bitcoin slipped below $82,000 on Thursday, reversing Wednesday’s brief push above $84,000. On a seven-day basis, BTC and most other major tokens — including ether ETH$2,490.55, XRP (XRP) and solana (SOL) — were largely little changed to positive, with zcash (ZEC) the only major coin to advance more than 10%. Smaller tokens, however, have seen bigger declines. The CoinDesk Memecoin Index fell more than 5%, while the CoinDesk Computing Select Index dropped 3.5% and the DeFi Select Index lost 2.5%. Analysts say the market is awaiting a fresh catalyst.

News publishers worry about how Meta might use their content under new terms

Open this photo in gallery:Attendees walk past a Meta logo during the Meta Connect conference in Menlo Park, Calif., last month. The company recently revised its terms of service. Jeff Chiu/The Associated PressCanadian news companies say they’re worried about changes to Meta’s META-Q terms of service and want the company to clarify how they will be affected. Meta’s changes to its terms of service, first reported by Nieman Lab, led some to suggest the terms could allow scraping of websites associated with a business account for AI training purposes. Meta has now revised those terms but the anxiety has not abated. European and British publishers are asking governments and regulators to step in. Publishers’ association News Media Canada said in a statement that “like publisher associations everywhere, we’re very concerned and are seeking clarity.”The fact Meta blocked news content in Canada following the passage of the Online News Act in 2023 is creating additional uncertainty over how Canadian outlets could be affected by the new terms.
