Canada Post showing ‘early signs’ of financial recovery, CEO says

Open this photo in gallery:Canada Post CEO Doug Ettinger, pictured in Ottawa in 2022, says the postal service remains 'overbuilt' in urban parts of the country. Justin Tang/The Canadian PressThe head of Canada Post says it is showing “early signs” of financial recovery despite falling revenue and bigger losses in the first half of the year. CEO Doug Ettinger says the postal service is winning back some of the parcel delivery market that has slipped away since 2019 as it continues with shipping discounts for small businesses and pushes a new online marketplace for them to sell products directly to consumers. However, he says Canada Post remains “overbuilt” in cities and must be smaller in those urban areas in the future. Switching the remaining four million addresses that still enjoy doorstep delivery to community mailboxes within about five years marks a key pillar of Canada Post’s plan to overhaul its business model in the face of declining letter mail and mounting financial losses.

Why do daycare costs vary so much between Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary?

Open this photo in gallery:A main reason for price discrepancies between daycares is the method in which provincial governments have chosen to structure their child care subsidies. DARRYL DYCK/The Canadian PressWhen we moved to Vancouver from Toronto, we expected to pay more for housing, transportation and food. According to Numbeo, grocery prices are 17.9 per cent higher, gas is 13.2 per cent higher and transit tickets are 4.5 per cent higher in Vancouver than Toronto. But one higher expense caught us off guard: daycare. Wasn’t the Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care system designed to cut the cost of daycare to an average of $10 a day across the country? My first instinct was to blame Vancouver’s notoriously unaffordable real estate, but Toronto’s wasn’t exactly cheap either. So why do subsidized daycare costs vary so much? I decided to look at three big cities: Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary. According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, in Vancouver the median cost of daycare for an infant is $40 a day. In Toronto, it’s $22 a day, and in Calgary, it’s $15 a day.

Underdog taps zerohash to bring crypto deposits to prediction markets

Prediction market operator Underdog has partnered with crypto infrastructure provider zerohash to introduce cryptocurrency and stablecoin deposits, with the new funding option expected to launch later this year. Eligible users will be able to fund their accounts directly through the Underdog app using supported digital assets, with the service designed to enable near-instant transfers around the clock, according to a Thursday announcement. Underdog did not specify which cryptocurrencies or stablecoins would be supported and did not respond to Cointelegraph’s request for clarification before publication. The new funding option will supplement existing methods, including debit and credit cards, Apple Pay and bank transfers. Users will not need to manage wallet addresses or select blockchain networks when making deposits. Founded in 2020, Underdog has more than 11 million registered accounts, according to IG Group, which agreed in July to acquire the company in a deal worth up to $1.3 billion. The transaction is expected to close in late 2026 or early 2027. According to DeFiRate data, the company recorded $1.4 billion in trading volume over the 30 days ending Oct.
