Canada's Hospital Data Partnership Offers the NHS a Workable Template for Early Warning - Distilled Post

On a cold Tuesday evening in November, a triage nurse in a busy English emergency department sees the third patient of the shift with the same breathless cough. Two doors down, a paramedic crew wheels in a young man whose breathing has slowed after taking what he believed was an ordinary pill. Neither moment is unusual. Each is also a data point that, in most places, reaches a public health analyst days later, if it arrives at all. An agreement in Canada is designed to shorten that interval, and its design deserves attention in Whitehall and across the NHS. The Public Health Agency of Canada will work with Vital, a data platform created by Unity Health Toronto, to analyse hospital records in near real time. The first applications are specific: clusters of respiratory illness and acute opioid toxicity. Over time the partners intend to build machine learning models that forecast the course of an epidemic and support emergency planning. The announcement is modest in tone, which is part of its merit. The relevance to Britain is structural.
